I just finished writing a simple Google Gadget character monitor. It is by no means a replacement for real tools like EveMon, but it does plug into your iGoogle home page so you can track your training and skills wherever you go.
At the moment it's very simple, shows the skill you're training, your wallet, and your known skills. Maybe I'll expand on it later, but I hope this is a good start. Since I've only tested it in FireFox 3.5 and IE 8, I'd definitely call it a beta. But if you're brave and would like to help me out, please give it a try. I'll be monitoring this thread for feedback, thoughts, etc.
You can install it by going to your iGoogle home page and selecting "Add Stuff" from the top right. Then on the left side click on the link that says "add feed or gadget." Then use this URL: http://www.jameswells.net/EveGadget/main.xml
Thanks advance, SaintDubious

Here's a link to the gadget information page:
http://www.google.com/ig/directory?url=www.jameswells.net%2FEveGadget%2Fmain.xml
That has a screen shot as well as an "add it now" button. Makes it much easier to try it out.

Edited by: Contralto on 13/02/2010 11:15:09 I managed to add it to my homepage but it wont display any info on my character, I entered my Id and tried both api's. I just get a blank place holder for the Avatar and a a list of row headers.
Edit: I found the problem, I use "NoScript" It blocked your website script.
Now I receive this error on the right panel
Quote: Error I'm terribly sorry, I've encountered an error and can go no further. Please contact the developer to let them know. The message is: Couldn't find Skill Group
Under the picture I only have the 1st 3 items, currently training is blank.
Would be nice if you could add thousand breaks on the wallet amount.

Thanks so much for giving it a try and getting back to me. It sounds like it's having trouble downloading and saving the skill tree for you. I'll see if I can figure it out and post a fix. Can you tell me what browser you're using? Also, good call on the wallet formatting, I'll fix that.
For anyone using Chrome, don't bother trying. I tried it out last night and it's a total failure. I'll see if I can fix that too.

Edited by: Contralto on 14/02/2010 11:33:47 I am using Firefox version 3.5.8
Strange thing is it is working fine for 2 of my accounts but not this one.
Another thing I have noticed is when I expand the skill section I cannot see the skill lvls, they are off the visible area.

Thanks for the continued information. If it's working for two of your accounts then I guess it isn't a browser issue. Can you tell me which skill you're training for the account that isn't working? Have you been training that skill the whole time it's been failing?
Sorry about the resizing, I haven't looked at how to respond to gadget resizing yet. Ideally I'd like it to be able to change its layout for a narrow fit, but I haven't gotten that working yet.

I just put a new version online. It now works on Google Chrome. It also resizes itself correctly so it will fit into a tall thin layout. I also added commas to the wallet.

Given the timing, I'm guessing it's a cache thing. Firefox will often cache a javascript file. Try going here directly: http://www.jameswells.net/EveGadget/Utils.js If you dont't see the function called "AddCommas" hit the refresh button until you do. That usually gets it going again for me.

Still have the problem on my main account, (no skill listing) I used the new updated version but no change.
I was skilling "Outpost construction" at the time I started using the gadget, I did a day on Energy pulse weapons and now skilling Caldari cruiser.
The other 2 instances and characters/accounts work as intended and the columns display correctly now.

I just updated it. I'm guessing that maybe you have an unpublished skill? I changed it so that if it runs into a skill it doesn't understand it will create a skill group called "Unknown" and put the skill there. It will also show the skill's ID number. Can you tell me if you see that, and if so what's the skill ID. And better yet, can you give a guess as to what skill it might be?
I also got it running in Opera. I added code that MIGHT work for Safari, but I didn't install Safari, so I can't say for sure. Anyone with Safari mind giving it a try and letting me know?
Thanks for the continued feedback.

Edited by: Contralto on 16/02/2010 05:32:54 Yes that fixed it! I have several skills that are no longer available, including Drone salvaging and Astronautic engineering.
The skill is listed in "unknown" as skill 3440
One minor suggestion, the character graphic is a bit on the large side. it kind of dominates the gadget. personal preference so not really important.
And a final request :) any chance of a skill queue entry?

Personal preference is very important when I completely agree :) I've taken the size down a bit and am pleased with the results, see what you think.
I've also updated the skill view a bit. Skills now show their rank, and if you hover over the name it will popup a tool tip with the description.
Lastly, I've added a skill queue tab.

yes very nice now! Time to retire The old unsupported "Eve IMonitor" despite it being a cool gadget. The developer has left Eve :(
One last suggestion, can you add a background color, something pale, similar to Igoogle colors. Perhaps an option to select a basic set of colors.
I run at 1920x1080 on a 32" panel and the gadgets are very large and the white background is a bit glary.
The new features are cool. We need a mail header notification tab now! :)

Yeah, it's a shame about that iMonitor thing. Looked like a cool gadget, lots of features. I hope mine proves useful, but I don't think I'm going to try to make it that rich, just a simple tool to check the queue.
I looked at the mail API, but they require a full key, which I'm sort of trying to avoid for now.
The colours are easy, so I dropped them in. You should see a drop down list of off white type colours in the settings. I just grabbed a few of the default ones I found here: http://www.w3schools.com/HTML/html_colornames.asp Feel free to request any specific ones you want, it's easy to add them.

Ugh, that's a nasty looking error report. I'm trying to reproduce it, but so far no luck. It's having trouble figuring out how much time is left on the skill in training (either next to you character portrait or on the Queue tab). Has it magically started working again? Is your queue empty, or did a skill just finish training? I'll keep working on it, but in the meantime if you have some more info I'd appreciate it, might help me narrow it down.

This app is sweet and runs great (Opera).
It would be even more awesome if you could make the skill training time count down.

I just put a new cut online. No obvious changes, it does a better job of handling empty skill queues or skills that are paused. Hopefully I fixed that nasty opera error, but I can't say for sure as I couldn't repeat it. Please let me know if you see it again.
As for the timer countdown, that's a great idea. I'll see what I can do.

How about skillpoint/clone level info.
It'd be nice to have an indicator that you're getting close to needing a clone upgrade. Maybe print the number in yellow when you reach 80% clone capacity, and red when it's over 90%.

Some more ideas to make this app even greater: Try adding training time to skills displayed in the right tab. Also try sorting skills and skill groups alphabetically - it's quite a mess now ;)

Thanks so much for all the cool suggestions. I didn't manage to get them all done, but I did get a few of them working:
- Skill Groups and Skills are now alphabetized (sorry for the mess ;) - The tool tips look much better (that was killing me) - Skill points are displayed - Clone points are displayed. If you're at 80% of the clone capacity it has a yellow background, if you're at 90% it's red. - The training time under the character portrait (not on the queue page) updates every 10 seconds.
I'll see if I can get the remaining suggestions when I have a bit more time to work on it. Thanks again for the ideas.

Can you get an Eve mail notifier working?
