How do these ships rank so high? I don't understand how an assault frigate can take out a battleship, and how a t2 cruiser can even be considered a threat to a BS. It seems to me that a Zealot vs. a Abaddon with mega pulse 2's would result in a quiet whimper, and then the zealot would simply cease to exist. Please help me to be more informed, if these ships are that good, I'll be buying one.

An Abaddon usually does beat a Zealot. And if an assault ship can get under the guns of a battleship to negate all damage, then its just game mechanics at work (in favor of the small ship).

I'd say pilgrim or curse vs Abaddon would have a more interesting result.
I did see a corpmate kill a raven in an ishkur a few years ago too, the missiles were just too big to hit, and the ishkur has pretty awesome resists

In general, HACs and AFs don't beat PvP fitted battleships.
A battleship will have big trouble trying to track an AF unless it's at a fair distance away from it, it will even have problems tracking HACs if they get into a close enough orbit.
A second way of reducing or avoiding damage is by simply outranging the enemy battleship. This is hard because battleships tend to have considerably better range than cruiser sized weapons. A tracking disruptor with a range script and/or a faction disruptor can help with this. The difficulty depends on the type of enemy BS, as an example, it's quite easy to stay out of a Megathron's range.
Once the damage from the battleship's guns can be avoided or migitated enough, usually through transversal, you only have to deal with drones, possible energy neutralizing and its tank.
Drones aren't much of an issue for most HACs unless they are bonused (Dominix or Rattlesnake bonus) but they can prove problematic for some AFs. Unless you think you can tank them until the battleship is 'poof' you'll have to take them out before focusing on the enemy hull.
A large neut will absolutely destroy most HACs and pose serious problems for frigate hulls too. A faction disruptor can help the long range kiters such as Vagabonds to stay out of their range, nosferatus can do the job of maintaining cap for tackle as long as they're within range.
The last issue is the tank, some BS have really heavy tanks and even if you can eventually break them there's a good chance of enemy support arriving before then, spoiling your fun. Fortunately HACs tend to have a fairly good damage output so this isn't as much of a concern for these as it is for AFs.
Bottom line however, PvP fitted battleships are beasts. Unless you have a good gameplan or plenty of spare ships waiting for you in a nearby station I suggest you avoid them in your AF or HAC.
