Maybe a dumb question but...
My alt here created a corp for himself, my other 2 alts and a friend at work. My question is: 1) do I need to rent an office so they can apply (and thus join) and 2) what purpose does then HQ have (i.e. how is the HQ location special)?

HQ needs to be in a NPC station. It has no hangars.
Clones "evicted" from player outposts are moved to their own corporation's HQ station.
You do not pay any monthly fees for a HQ, you only pay them for offices. Offices have hangars.
You used to need to be either at the HQ or at an office of the player corp you wanted to join, but now you can join from anywhere, AFAIK, directly from the corp showinfo.

This is correct, all they have to do is join through the corp info box. The nice thing about this is now if you need to transfer alts in and out of corps it takes so much less time than it used to.
