I just re-activated my account after about a year of inactivity. I played on Windows before, but during my inactive time I've switched entirely to Linux. Back when I last played there was an official Linux version but I see that has been discontinued. It seems to work fine in Wine, however (I spun up a trial account to mess around before re-activating). I had some problems with the 1.1.38 version of wine but downgrading to .37 fixed them.
I was curious how many other people play EVE on Linux, and what kind of issues they run into? I've noticed the jukebox doesn't work (not that I care), and I've heard EVE Voice doesn't work (again, don't care). How often does a Wine/EVE update make the game unplayable for you? The last thing I want is to get absorbed into the game and have an expansion released that breaks Linux compatibility.
Also, this isn't a Linux specific question, but what's the most common third-party VOIP software for EVE? The last corp I was in used teamspeak. I ask because Ventrilo doesn't have an official Linux version, but TeamSpeak and a couple others do.

Well, one alternative to wine is VMware Workstation running a Windows 7 Virtual Machine, and Eve actually plays fine there. I have a 2500x1600 display with vmware running in a window and eve playing full screen within that. Haven't tried voice. Yeah, it would be nice for CCP to have a linux native port - but I'll settle for their doing what they can to ensure eve plays as close to native speed as possible within virtualized windows.

Well unfortunately my system is a little too underpowered to run both EVE and a virtual OS. As it is I have to disable compiz just to get smooth EVE performance lol (EVE averages like 90% CPU usage for me, compiz averages like 10%, doesn't leave much wiggle room).

Basically, if you've got a wine setup that works for you, stick to it, and don't upgrade wine (or your graphics drivers or kernel) until there's a major distro upgrade that's been confirmed to actually work. Wine upgrades breaking stuff are rare. Kernel and graphics drivers mess stuff up regularly.

Slackware Linux Howto for eve + ventrilo.
Unfortunately if you run ubuntu you may have a hard time, or ATI.
Also there is a program called mangler that is a client that connects to ventrilo servers. Found it in the linux forums.
Running dual clients right now on that setup, hope it helps.

I use Linux too, although I had serious issues with my ATI card and recently gave up a long personal preference for ATI cards and switched to Nvidia, because ATI drivers for Linux are the worst supported I have ever found. Nvidia might not be open sourcing theirs but at least they work.

Hello
These boards have a linux subforum too. If your corpmates are using ventrilo you can get Mangler, which is basically a ventrilo linux client :)
