Edited by: Lebbrin on 17/02/2010 00:39:07 Ok, before I start, this is not a QQ rant. I got podded. I get that. I had some trouble though, so I'd like to ask a few questions so I don't make the same mistakes twice. Ok, here goes. (And it should be noted that this is only my second time to encounter PvP. The first time I actually held my own and the other guy warped out.)
Last night I jumped into a system on a mission. It was .4 space. I notice upon arrival that there is a red flagged shipped hanging out. I select the station, start to warp and immediately get scrambled. He fired first. I fired back and deployed my drones. I wasn't doing so well and when his 2 buddies warped in I decided it was time to leave. I didn't have a Warp Stabilizer since I didn't really expect to get jumped in .4 so I headed toward the gate. I knew I was close enough to the gate to jump because when I right clicked on the gate I got the 'Jump' option in the drop down. However every time I tried to jump I would get a pop up message that I couldn't jump because of some action. I couldn't read it all because it was gone as soon as one of the rat's hit me. So, with no ability to warp or jump, all I could do was wait for the podding. Talk about frustrating.
So here are my questions.
Any ideas why the gate would not allow me to jump? It is my understanding that if a player shoots me, I can retaliate even in 1.0 space without any negative standings. Why would the gate block my jump? I am SURE that he fired first. Could it be that I was actively firing and needed to stop shooting first? If a player can attack me and thereby lock me out of the ability to jump, why jump blind into any low sec space? Instead of starting on him should I have just flown toward the gate and tried to jump? I hope being shot at doesn't prevent a gate jump.
Other than a warp stabilizer to negate the scramble, is there any other gear I should equip so I can cut and run if I need to? I didn't want to fight and would have preferred to avoid it. (Especially since I was in a mission boat. I don't own a PvP ship yet.)
Please, only nice advice. I'm just trying to understand.
Thanks,
Lebbrin

It doesn't matter who fires first. If you shoot back you get an aggression timer. That's what was preventing you from jumping.

You have a session timer after firing your guns, 1 min later you can jump - Thats why you were stuck -- If you realize things are going wrong just stop firing your Mods - meaning guns and all ewar, drones etc... -- after a minute you can jump. See below
Combat Agression Timer (60 Seconds)The combat aggression timer will come into effect at any time you have performed an aggressive action against another pilot. This timer will prevent you from docking or using stargates. Note that the timer will count from the last aggressive action you did.
Quote: Example: A pilot is outnumbered at a gate. He turns off all of his guns to stop all aggressive actions. He now has to tank for 60 seconds until he can jump through the gate and escape his attackers.
here is link to all timers if that helps

Ok, thanks. I knew it was a simple answer. Now as to being able to warp away, would on stabilizer usually be enough or are most red players prepared for that? Also, are there any skills to help lessen the effects for scramblers?

It all depends on how many "points" have been applied to your ship. A long range warp disrupter has a single "point" of strength. One warp stab would be enough to counter this. If they are using a short range warp scrambler that would be 2 "points" and therefore you would need 2 warp stabs.
If there are multiple people tackling you then all their "points" add up. Therefore, no amount of warp stabs is a guarantee to get away.

Well... yes, if you turns red to you, you CAN shoot and kill him (though, this is not advised unless you KNOW you can kill him).
As for not be able to jump through a stargate: Regardless of who shot first, firing on a ship still counts as "aggression." While "aggressed" you cannot dock at station or jump through stargates. To de-aggress you must wait between 30 second to 1 minute after you last fired or used any mods against the target.

It is HIGHLY inadvisable to use Warp Core Stabilizers in any combat situation (be it PvP or PvE). Fitting 1 WCS reduces your targeting range and scan resolution (targeting speed) between 40 to 50%. Moreover, each WCS only negates 1 point of warp disruption. Warp Disruptors possess 1 point and Warp Scrams possess 2 points (in addition to disabling your MicroWarpDrive).
If you truly wish to avoid fighting, change tactics. If someone flips your jetcan or wreck, do not fire on them unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE you can take them. Just because they turn red flashy and shootable to you, doesn't mean you are the same to them. By firing on them you effectively give them the ability to shoot you.
edit: addition
If your corp is at war with someone, change tactics completely: don't fly alone, don't fly slow (Battlecruisers and Battleships are big fat targets), and don't do missions. "Just because I look like an idiot doesn't mean I am one." ~Unknown |

I underlined and bolded the bits where you went wrong.
Also, your Session Change Timer was probably still counting down.
