I have done a fair bit of hisec scanning now.
What I have found have been:
radar sites - good loot, usually worth 10+M isk per site
mag sites - crap, find the salvager kind that is worth MAYBE 1M per site
grav sites - found some OK ones but nothing exciting enough to hop in my mining ship, most have been found already and a good portion already desolate
Plexes - I have found class 1-2 plexes, not bothered running any of them
So anyway - my question is what can I expect to find if I go out scanning in losec, aside from a swarm of ?
Is it worth doing or should I focus instead on WH exploration?

Edited by: Seurimas on 17/02/2010 15:59:56 Same sites, likely worth 2x as much or more each. However, some of them are really hard to scan down. Seems downright impossible if you ask me, unless there's some 200% scan strength bonus I'm just missing.
WH's are good if you've got like two accounts with a BC and some support or just a really nicely fit BC/BS. Although if you're good at it, you could get away with a frigate in a frontier radar site (and the loot is still pretty nice! \o/)

Is it the same value per site as I mentioned above?
Where mag sites = bad, radar = good?

Firstly, you dont bother to do the combat plexes? But these are by far the more valuable.
Secondly, what ship are you scanning with?
You really need to be using a cov-ops with gravity capacitor rigs, and have good astrometrics skills (there are 5 if I remember)
If possible get astrometrics to 5 and the support skills all to 4.
And yes scanning in low sec is far more profitable, I remember tehre are some pretty decent combat plexes to be found they may drop up to even a few hundred million per plex if your lucky and get a good drop.

Yes, the plexes are worth running for faction gear, I know. I just haven't been prepared to run them when I have found them, and the one time I did try someone was already in there.
I am not yet using a covert ops to do the scanning. Necessary for losec?

IMO, CovOps is necessary for ANY scanning if you want to have a chance at being the first in a site. Problem you run into is that then you need your plexing ship nearby as well - so you can capitalize on your discovery quickly.
Astrometrics to IV is plenty. Why would you train to V?
Quote: Astrometrics: Skill at operating long range scanners. Allows one additional probe in space per level.
There is no item that benefits from Astrometrics V that I am aware of. However, Rangefinding and Pinpointing are both very important to have at least at IV to improve your scan results & time.

T3 is 50x better than cov-ops to scan with as can run the same sites that you scanned in hi-sec. Only sites you can't do with a T3 cruiser are sites which are limited to frigate sized (assault frig is overkill) and tend to have rubbish in them anyway.
Is also the bugged site with the red cans which haven't been fixed in the years since ccp known about it - so it can't be completed so wont respawn except at downtime. Nothing in that site worth having anyway.

Seems like t3 are a pretty poor choice for losec scanning tho - since you will become an instant gank magnet...
Anyway - I am planning on doing 3 man fleet op to do losec scanning, but since we don't have the right skillpoints in the right places to use covops it seems like it might be a waste of time...
We were planning to use: Myrm - pvp/pve fit cane - same blackbird - scanner / ecm support / codebreaker / utility
Seems like this won't work out so good tho...

Quote: I have done a fair bit of hisec scanning now.
Well they did say hi-sec?
Low sec is a matter of watching local (and your probes) like a hawk and in my limited experience scanning with a T3 (not lost one yet) you can still run many low-sec sites. I picked empty or near empty systems. The low sec rad/mag sites are quite quick to do and t2 salv from low sec can be very rewarding. Can make your T3 unscannable but then all that happens is the scanners decide your in a site so visit the sites anyway ... You can run a 2nd ship to watch the sites (combat with gates) so that any ship using the gate is seen. This will give you enough warning to warp out if too much to handle. This wont help for exploration with no gates - like rad/mag sites, but you can do those sites generally faster.
When you get escalations in low sec, t3 is great if they can't scan you down. I've had a low sec escalation where the local system grew from 3 ships to 23 ships with about 50 probes flying about and I suspect they were scanning for my T3 ship ...

I started scanning after about 2 months of playing Eve. This is what I have gathered over the years.
Combat plexes
High Sec = frig class, if you find a good plex (3/10) and it drops the good stuff you can walk away with 100-200 mil of frig modules. However on average expect 30 mil or so. You can run a lot of the plexes in cruisers, but some are limited to frigs.
Low Sec = cruiser class, find a good plex (6/10) you can walk away with a bil + (rare, I have only found 1), on average 50-100 mil. A lot of these plexes can be done in hac's, but some are what one would expect from a level 5 mission and require a battleship gang.
Null Sec = battleship class, honestly I spend most of my time in null sec in pvp... but I have heard of people getting x-type stuff. Expect to make a lot of isk (but have to split it with your gang).
Radar Sites
High Sec - not worth my time
Low Sec - I will run them if im bored, decryptors are a nice find. I run these solo.
0.0 - These are great, if you walked out of one with less than 200 mil in goodies i would be suppriesed. Can be run solo.
Magnetometric Sites
High Sec - meh
Low Sec - medium T2 rig BPC's are somewhat rare but they do pop up, and it is hit or miss if it is a total crap rig.
0.0 - large T2 rig BPC's, same as above.
Grav Sites
High Sec - I really wish they would have done more in this area instead of buffing the belts you can warp to. For the most part they will only provide you with alternatives to when the belts are empty.
Low Sec - You will start to see 0.0 ores showing up here, the lower the sec, the higher end ore you will find. If you want to mine in low sec, this is the ticket.
Null Sec - I cant ever recall narrowing one of these down to 100%, but if I were a 0.0 miner, this is the way I would go because you are not in a belt someone could just warp to.
Ladar
High Sec - Ive seen a few near gas cloud constellations, but i think it was a glitch.
Low Sec - 95% of these are gas cloud harvesting for boosters. There are a special type that you will find in the gas cloud constellations which are more like Radar sites and require a hacking module. You will find things like booster reactions and blueprints in this type of site.
Null Sec - Like above only I would assume better.
*Ladar sites seem to have been overlooked for a while, a gas cloud harvester is something you could find in one of these plexes, before Aprocryphia(?) this was a sweet find because there was no blueprint for them (sold from 15-30 mil), now when you find one it is a slap in the face.
----
Astrometrics 5 - this skill does unlock Deep Space probes, I do use them, but unless there is something I do not know about them, they are pretty worthless. The reason I finally trained up Astro 5 was for the black ops.
I hope this helps.

I'm surprised you haven't found any 4/10's in high sec. Last one I ran dropped 180m in overseer loot. They can also drop rubbish of course but it's risk free and doable in an assault frigate, although you can use hacs/cruisers if you wish.
Low sec, the tougher signatures tend to be mining sites and higher class wormholes. Maybe its a case of working on your probing technique but I haven't found them particularly harder than scanning in high sec. ~ Soar Like a Penguin |

I did lowsec scanning for about 6 months - very profitable. Currently most mag and radar sites in lowsec I can scan out and and run with a Force Recon. I use this ship now, as with the right setup you can get every in-game plex scanned to 100% (my base scan strength of probe in launcher is 82.5 ish). Also with the Force Recon you can fit all salvagers, codebreakers, analysers, and still have enough dps to clear the sites. Lows combat sites, as mentioned is where the money is at, and I usually used a Hyper and Hac to run them.
Also as an added bonus, people are trying to kill you so you gotta pay attention, which I find fun :)

Oh yes and on this note, a lot of the plexes are not like missions. If you are paying attention and know someone is coming after you, you can get clever and be prepared for them, sometimes even turn the tables on them.
IE: there is a drone plex that pays very well but there is a "mother strain" (i think that's its name) you kinda have to snipe at. If some unsuspecting individual wanting to gank you wondered into the area that would get the mother to agro him... there would be a fist full of pain coming at him. A little help from you and he wouldn't even have time to align out once he realizes whats happening.

I've been trying to do some 'roaming' exploration in lowsec lately.
Generally, running around unused areas of 0.4 - 0.2. Using an arbitrator with T1 drones (T2 around the corner).
All was fine, till I ran into a radar site in 0.3 which I could not scan down for the life of me. Getting stuck at about 85%. I've got scan deviation at LV3 and Rangefinding at LV3, so these could use a boost. I was using an arbi with sister probes (altho no sister launcher).
It's kinda crap that you can't scan down stuff in lowsec (and hey, 0.3 aint all that low) without a covops. On the other hand, I'm not hauling my BS or even a BC through a couple of lowsec systems to do a combat site.
I guess I'd be more inclined to do that in friendly nullsec, rather than in lowsec.
The question here is, whether there's a module/skill combination that would enable me to do lowsec exploration in a single ship, at least radar and mag sites? --

The pilgrim doesn't have much of an edge over an arbitrator. It can fit covops cloak, and is more sturdy, in terms of damage output and scanning, the ships are basically the same, at 6 times lower pricetag.
The T3 cruiser is outside of my price range.
Maybe I should resort to scanning for sites in 0.5 and run them in my abaddon? Or just blitz through hisec systems doing all the crap radar sites, before people get their paws on them ?
I'd love to see a module increasing scan strength of a ship. Even if by 10%. Hauling a ship around is troublesome. Doing exploration in team is kinda crap, because one person is basically left out of the action (in the covops), while others are doing all the shooting and looting. --

Arazu - Exploration Fit
Salvager II 250mm Prototype Gauss Cannon I Sisters Core (or expanded if you have Recon V skill) Probe Launcher Covert Ops II Cloaking Device
Yt8 Microwarp Drive Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Cap Recharger II Codebreaker I Analyser I
Damage Control II Medium Armor Repairer II Racial Armor Hardener II Racial Armor Hardener II
4 x Small Racial Drone II 2 x Medium Racial Drone II
Gravity Capacitor Rig I Gravity Capacitor I Sisters Scan Probes
This is my Force Recon fit I mentioned above. I currently use this for scanning in null sec. When I ran sites in low, any radar or mag site I found I could run with this ship as is. As mentioned it scans down any site in game. I have found 10/10 sites or any of the hardest ones.
In lowsec most of the rats are frigs and cruisers so I fly 4 small t2 and one med t2 drones - these will kill frigs fast and cruisers pretty good too.
The Arazu only has 40 m drone bandwidth, so this is why I use that particualr drone formation. the fit is cap stable and the covert ops cloak is awesome for flying around hostile null and low space (and essential). The main drawback is the low dps - gimped in order to fit salvagers and cloak, but it will kill all rats in a lowsec radar or mag site so this is what you want.
If I was tained in Ammarr I would fly the Pilgrim ( I think this is the force recon one) as it has a better Drone bay and bandwidth I believe.
IMO the Force Recon can be considered the "cruiser class" cov ops explorer - a simple 5% astro bonus and it would be. And slightly cheaper than a T3 :)
Also people generally will AVOID you in an Force Recon, as opposed to hunting you down in a T3.

I do have a Proto II Cloak, and its working fine for scanning out of hiding. Wouldn't move without one, really. I also do have 2x Grav rigs, and sister probes. THe only thing I'm missing is the launcher with 5% bonus. I guess i'll just work on the scanning skill, to get 10% more. --

Through my own testing, the magic threshold combination of skill/equipment whatever is <82.5. This is the base scan strength of the probe loaded in your scan launcher on your ship. You can see this figure by opening your fitting screen and selecting "show charge info" under the launcher. If you are above 82.5, you can find every site in game.
I also find the 6% Prospector Implants for scan strength and scan deviation help alot. My general rule is the harder the site (to find) the better the loot (potential).

While the 2 tech 2 fits listed above would be optimum, if you don't have the skills trained yet (or the money to risk) and seeing as you at least started caldari, here's my submission to the 'solo exploration boat' party.
[Drake, Low Sec] Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Multiphasic Bolt Array I Multiphasic Bolt Array I
Invulnerability Field II Codebreaker I Analyzer I Large Shield Extender II Shield Recharger II Large Shield Extender II

Medium Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I Medium Core Defence Field Purger I Medium Core Defence Field Purger I
Hobgoblin I x5
Does a decent ammount of damage, can scan most sites quickly, specially with good skills and some implants, and tanks 230 odd dps, cap stable depending on skills. I've been using it for a few weeks now and it's served me well. The cloak is to hide while you probe and don't have time to constantly check directional, and if you're really nervous you can carry a couple WCS in your cargo hold and throw them on to get past the camps in border systems.
Been using this for a few weeks and it's paid for itself and then some. Swap for T2 and stuff where you can fit, this is just what I put together when planning the thing. _________________________________________________________

I haven't done a single high-sec or low-sec plexes nor anomalies, but done plenty of 0.0 versions.
All you need to avoid ganking is open directional scanner window with use overview settings unchecked. Then being very active pushing scan-button
When you began to see probes in scanner, bail out. That is with cosmic sigs. With anomalies you need to bail out asap as someone enters the system since one probe will show all anomalies 100%
Yesterday I did nice 8/10 plex with average 10 hostiles in system and peak around 30. Some people never learn to probe...sigh. And yes. I got some nice loot from there, only about 600m but nice sum overall with bounties.
WAAAYyy Offtopic.
I would have probed down and killed any plexer with that much time they had...about 2+hour. Some people make me blush... Repeat: They spend 2+ hours in same system as plexer...sigh... without single probe launched and they did call themselves pvpers.
I suppose I'm professional gardener if I have apple tree and wait the apple to fall down after the first day it appears on the tree. One day I might get lucky... or worms do. |

Bah. 4/2/2/2 in astrometric skills and a standard probelauncher on a t1 cruiser is plenty for high sec scanning. I can get a complete scan on a system, with 100% on each sig in about a minute or 2 per signature. The only fancy gear I have are the 8 sisters core probes i carry. Otherwise an arbitrator, with a core launcher. How often is there an actual race condition when scanning. and even if there is, the extra 30 seconds you might gain dosent help when they can come in as well. I have had visitors in combat sites, luckily for me so far, they have all been gracious enough to leave it for me. But if not, well I know how to scramble for the good stuff, and move on to the next site. --- im not paranoid, they really are trying to have my stuff. |
