I've always tried to talk about the good and the bad. I've had wonderful days in eve where everything goes right, NPC's fall by my guns and I don't get podded by some random group of 30 folks at a gate.
Not today. You see, today I was the vicim of my own complacency, and in trusting someone to do the right thing.
Yes, I fell victim to the oldest trick in the book.
The escrow scam.
I'm beyond the bitterness, beyond the burning hatred for the person who now has 12 million of my hard-earned ISK.
I bought myself a +1 implant which was labeled a +3.
Yes, I know. When doing the "Show Info" on the item I should have actually looked at the description of the item I was buying. I just looked at the picture and it didn't compute = bad. Completely my fault.
The only reason I'm posting this, is that I hope that it keeps someone down the road from making the same mistake.
I reckon I don't really have any right to give advice on the subject, but I will anyways.
Make sure you check every escrow you plan on buying. There are people out there who make it their lot in life to con the unwary.
As a result of my mistake, this person will undoubtedly continue to pull off these shenanigans, since it's working.
Also, it doesn't stop with mislabeled escrows. Look at prices on market very carefully before buying. I've seen 1 mn MWD's in Nonni (at every station that doesn't have a ready supply) selling for 9 million isk.
Anyways, I know it wasn't a *huge* loss or anything, but I hope that my example maybe helps some other pilot in the future to avoid the same problem.
Cheers

As you pointed out, its not the sellers fault people are too stupid/lazy to check prices.
I use the terms seller, not scammer, because I don't see how this guy scammed anyone. He dangled a hook into a pond and someone took a bite. Too bad.
There's no legislating for stupidity in the game, is there? --------------------------------------------

In a way you're correct. The point of this post isn't to say "woe is me" or "change escrows". The only thing I'm trying to do is say we're all human. And we all make mistakes. I'm just hoping that my example will strike a nerve with someone who will now in the future pay more attention to the market and escrows.
I could have just said nothing, and therefore provide no ammunition for the forum trolls to fire at me, but I think that the message this post is trying to convey is more important than the hundred "you're a retard" or "you're lazy" posts which are sure to follow.

At least you didn't get 1 trit out of it??????
It's interesting to see that scammers are getting more clever and sophisticated. This sure beats the Apoc/Omen scam.

It doesnt help thet +1 look just like +3 implants now, where as before they were different icons. I was looking through a hanger and thought i had a +3 percept that I had forgot about, but it was a +1. I only realised when i tried to put it on the market and the average price was 70k

Hope other people will check the market prices better then i did. especially the location of the ',' and the '.' Also if you get a warning you're buying or selling above/below average price, READ it.

I'll let your last sentence hang around there while I contemplate how you can NOT be a scammer when you sell items with false information.

Its about perception. I dont see the guy that sold the implant as a scammer, more an enterprising seller taking advantage of people's laziness/stupidity (delete as applicable).
I look forward to the next "I've been scammed, be careful out there people" thread, with moist anticipation.
And my point still stands. There is no legislating for idiots.
Have a nice, "scam" free day, y'all.
