Yes I"m a noob. How do I gain standing and with whom do I gain standing with if I am looking to join Minmitar for FW. Thank you for any help you can give.
Oh and it says my standing are only off by like 0.5

Do PVE missions for any NPC Minmatar corp till your standing is high enough. (you will get a storyline mission for every 16 missions you complete for the same faction at the same level - storylines give you faction standing)
Go to an empire data centre and turn in pirate faction tags to get standings.
Or you could join a Minmatar Militia corp (its the corp standing that counts not your own unless you join solo).

I think the new advanced military tutorial added in dominion is what most noobs use to get in faction war very fast(or something in the new player experience stuff). We have started to get a big influx of people that are a few days old popping up in milita asking wtf is going on. |

From the Advanced Combat tutorial you will get the same item you'd get from making a new account with the "special edition" of EVE (retail version). If your account is less than 30 days old and you do not have the required standings, it will allow you to join a militia and immediately set your standings towards that militia's parent faction to 0.5, which happens to be the standing required for the militia.
If your account is older than 30 days, you still could do such things as run the combat and advanced tutorials on several schools, since the last mission in both is an important storyline mission. That should give you the required standings in a single evening. By doing the tutorial on starter station, tutorial on the rookie storyline station, combat tutorial storyline, advanced combat tutorial storyline I believe you'll be already at 0.25, so the second school should get you to 0.4x, and third school over 0.5 or so. Alternatives include the scripted datacenter missions.

contact David Devant or Ya Nor from CTRL-Q, they are a corp in minnie FW who you may be able to join and save the you doing the grind. Used to be in CTRL-Q myself, good bunch of lads and better to learn from them than go thru the hell of the militia chat channel
