I use a Logitech TrackMan Wheel every day and I find its more comfortable, for me, to game with. It is more comfortable for my hand and wrist, and now that I am used to it I couldn't go back easily to a normal mouse (well, I have been used to it for years so that helps I guess).

Using Logitech's Trackman Wheel myself and sure, there is "that" learning curve, but it was either that or end up with a bad carpal tunnel in my wrist.

mmh, I've formerly been playing Quake with a trackball and I felt way more comfortable with that than now doing some simple mining in eve with a touchpad. Wonder, if anyone does pvp with a touchpad. Horror.

I don't understand why everyone has to have a fancy mouse for playing games, especially this game. FFS.
I've always used a cheap-o $5.99 Logitech USB optical and been more than happy with it's performance.

I used to be the biggest trackball *****. It was awesome for first-person shooters. But yes, I admit that in EVE I prefer a regular mouse. ____________________

Well, that style of pointing device is more suited to Graphic Design/CAD/etc... not gaming.
Find something that fits your hand comfortably and will be comfortable for long periods of time. If you really want a trackball style then look at Logitech's series (Trackman Marble, Trackman Wheel [both come in corded and cordless]).
Otherwise I say stick to a standard mouse (preferably an ergonomically designed one that fits the palm of your hand just right, rather than a standard 'hump' mouse - this helps cut down on Repetitive Use Injuries). --------- ~Carlosjuero Prodigy Evolution Corp. http://p-evo.aowc.net/ |

QFT
Been using Logitech TrackMan for ages, pretty much since it first came out. Marvelous device. One has to remember that the thumb is the most agile finger on a normal hand.

yes. I pvp'd for around 2 years on a touchpad.. im trying to work myself off it now
I run a laptop, and dont have the time to move my hands from my mouse to my keyboard to type/hit f keys, vent hotkey, etc.
now i got me a fancy mouse and im getting used to using it properly, but I still hate the delay between typing and moving my mouse. Its annoying.. Besides, you can use a touchpad anywhere, you cant use a mouse everywhere.

Your thumb has much more precision and dexterity than the traditional 'pointer-finger' trackballs.

I just got one of these because I've been having quite a bit of wrist pain and I like it a lot so far.

I do. I used to use the eraser mouse, but the eraser fell apart and I couldn't find my spare. I still use the eraser mouse for shooters, but tend to use the touchpad for everything else. _________ My name is Pater! |

Same here. Sniping, tracking (e.g. keeping the crosshair on a guy); precision seems unmatched by any other kind of mouse. And if I were to feel like it, I can do it for 18 hours per day without so much as an itch in my wrist.

Get one that lets you use the ball with your thumb, like the Logitech Trackman. You can spin your ship in station around and around and around without lifting the mouse at all.

Real men use touchscreens. Nothing compares to being able to press your finger on a ship in space to target it, drag your view around for a better look at the combat, or tap your way through space freely. Better response time too.

Do 'real men' also enjoy the pain in their forearm muscles after holding their arms up for hours at a time?

Confirming this, have had it for years. I keep a regular mouse for any FPS like games, but since EVE is pretty much point and click like your normal OS interface, this thing is perfect.
edit: Also used the 'normal' trackman from logitech (nav computer on a boat), while in theory the thumb-ball could be more precize for some people, its not for me. The optical's large ball operable by two or three fingers works a lot better, but again, probably personal preference. -----

The use of touchscreens necessitates a change in the placement of the monitor to make it more ergonomic. I've never understood why people position touch screen monitors like regular monitors and then complain that they're uncomfortable to use.

The eve scanning system pleads for trackpads. if I'm on covops duty, i switch to my notebook. it cuts scanning time in half. [note here i'm talking about a capacious, precision mac touchpad...not the cramped dell poo patties]
