Have just moved into 0.0 to rat.
Question: Where, and how, do you find Officer spawns?
Thanks,

ok...
But, is there anything you can do to increase your chances? Are Officer spawns entirely random, or do they occur in certain types of systems more than others?
Like, lower 0.0 security systems?
If you have looked through a series of belts and found nothing, should you redo the same belts, or move to entirely different systems? Are some regions more likely than other regions?
Thanks for any clues!.

Lower security systems usually have better chances of officer spawns. Also, clearing every belt instead of chaining will also increase the chances of officer spawns. I went through 185 belts one night in a caldari 0.0 region and only found 1 officer spawn at the very end. a 1.6m cruiser that only dropped faction ammo.

Also, chaining is the best way to increase the chances. Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

The lower the true security of the system, the higher the chances. Also, any region that has sovereignity held by the pirate faction is treated as having a true security of -1.0, thus having the highest possible chances. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

i have ratted long time now and my experience is this.
If you chain you dont get anything. Only steady isk income. Max i had whas 1mil every min. If you kill all belts there is a chance of getting dread or hauler spawn. Officer more like 0.01% change unless you rat whole day in a -0.80 + system all day long. Best way for officer and maybe dread is to go to pirate home regions. and just go look every belt after downtime.
First time i tryed that i got a kaikka not long ago. Loot whas Kaikka Cruise and siege launcher and 4 dread modules. Bounty whas i believe 11mil on it.

I have ratted and plexed for years now .
I think that CCP changes the drops sometimes to make 0.0 more enticing , or more profitable for the people who live there. I also think they "manage" the drops . So the market on them doesnt undercut itself.
In all that time I've never gotten an officer drop , but some of my friends have had 3 or more. I have heard that the Officers are race/region specific. Brynn in Dread or Serp region for instance , Kaikka in another.

chaining is no good for officer spawns. officer spawns dont hang around for long before despawning. they respawn in the same region, random system. with no proof to offer, i have heard from corp mates that it seems like some systems are better than others. given the number of times they called out 'officer spawn' i think they may be right.
special note- poachers. if you have never seen an officer spawn and you rat a lot, you are probably being poached. how it works- poacher sits in station or logged out or 1 jump away. cloaker watches the belts. faction spawn shows up, poacher runs in and kills it. cloaker salvages it to cover tracks. done. often takes less than 60 to 120 seconds from the time the spawn shows up. |

In short, not an good enough argument to break my chains ;p
ps. And yea the "poacher" theory combined stupidity with paranoia and came up with something rediculus.

This is what I have heard with regards to rat spawning mechanics:
Each time you kill off the entire spawn, the spawn increases in value a bit. The next time that spawn... spawns... the rats will be a little bigger. Eventually the spawn will hit a maximum value (triple BS spawn). Clearing this maximum value spawn will cause the spawn to "reset". When the spawn resets with random "value". It is when this happens that you have a chance at getting a faction or officer spawn. The other time you have a chance for this to happen is when the spawn spawns for the first time that day - hence the reason why people believe that you have a better chance of getting a faction/officer spawn just after downtime. After downtime, nobody has caused the spawns to happen yet, so every spawn you see is a "reset" spawn in each belt.
Because chaining a spawn doesn't allow the spawn to "reset", chaining prevents you from EVER getting an officer/faction spawn.
Also please remember that spawns will move from belt to belt which is why sometimes the spawn is suddenly different when you come back to the same belt.
I do not know if a spawn will eventually "despawn" or not and then "respawn" with something different. My experiences though are that spawns do not "despawn" unless you kill off too much of the spawn. If you do not kill too much of the spawn, the spawn will only move from belt to belt. ----------

About poaching... I kind of do it.
Once I had to fly hard 11 jumps to get my ratting alt where my cov ops scout was going and where I spotted nice juicy target. I think I got over 1+b worth stuff from the wreck+salvage.

This not true. I have seen with my own eyes a faction spawn warp into the rats I was chaining.
I have also verified on 2 other occations a faction rat spawned into a chain by checking and finding a rat that I had marked with stucture damage earlier.
So NOT true at all.

I logged into Singularity a few months back and ratted all day there just to see how rat re-spawned worked. No firm conclusions, but did discover a few things.
During this ratting quest I took notes of what was in each belt as I cleared it and attempted to chain. After several passes through the systems belts I discovered that rats tend to move around if you don't get to them in time, this was in a 20 or so belt system. Also, they seemed to on occasion just disappear entirely. Now this may have been caused by rapid de-spawn mechanics on Singularity implemented by CCP to lower test server loads, but when solo on Tranquility in similar systems they seem to act similar.
Now as far as which is more likely to increase your chance of faction/officer spawns, I have no idea. Although I doubt either have any effect, but chaining does increase the chance that the same BS will spawn again. Quite obviously, this will increase the isk/hour rate.
In any case, welcome to the mad-house and enjoy the rat shooting while you can.

no it makes the guy sitting idle with two chars at a belt cloaked hoping a faction spawn will turn up a dumbass. I guess if you don't see that then it applies to you aswell.

Ive gotten 4 officer spawns, i dont rat much, i do mostly plexing but officers are random within the region, there is usually always one spawned somewhere, and when i say region i meean a NPC region such as Stain, venal, curse, or the gallente one w/e it is. In one occasion i ratted a system for aweek straight, only me, and got one. The other stain occasion is when i wwent to a random system to rat (the system was a deadend and no one had been there for weeks) and he was just sitting there in the ice belt. The other 2 were there and i was in the right place at the right time as there were ppl ratting.

To me, the spawns seem completely random, I'm seeing spawns get crappier gradually also from time to time. I've had 5 faction spawns in a couple hours, and I had nothing for an entire day. AFAIK the reason it is nice after downtime is because there are no spawns yet generated, and every time that happens (after dt, or ~15min. after one is killed) it is a draw in The Great Estamel's Modified Invulnerability Field Lottery. That does not mean a next spawn would have any correlation with the previous one, it's just another ball out of the bingo ball turning thingy. So people start steamrolling asteroid belts to generate as many spawns as possible in the shortest time possible.
And I could be wrong, since this kind of stuff is hard to prove without CCP handing us the server code.

Chaining is finding a nice fat BS rat spawn and then killing only the BSs from it. By leaving the smaller escort craft alive the exact same BSs will respawn in a short while allowing you to chain the BS kills. Do this with enough belts and you can rack in some really nice isk/hour.
And no, there are no good rats in low sec. But of course that depends on your definition of a good rat. ______________________
