Finally got everything running ok.
Kubuntu 9.10 Latest wine Kernel 2.6.32 Latest Nvidia driver
One client seems to run pretty well now. I'm quite impressed. 2 however and things go pear shaped. Massive stuttering and it just does not seem to like it. I could always run 2 perfectly fine in windows 7.
Does anyone have any dual client tips? or anything I can do to increase speed? tune things up?

Video card and ram? They make a huge difference. Kubuntu is about the same speed as Vista, I wouldnt even try to run 2 clients with less than 4 gigs of ram and a 9800 in Vista or Ubuntu.
Set your video options to "maximize for performance" for running 2 clients and see what happens.

On my Quad-core I need -sadly- roughly one core for every instance of wine/eve.
Up to 2 clients is possible without hassle, 3 if i disable compiz (xfce).
You might want to try xfce (xubuntu). I have heard, that you can change between the DEs.

It would make sense to have one core per game instance.

One thing I find intriguing is when using taskset to force a single copy of Eve to stay put then stutters are more common and stronger. I'm a bit surprised by this as there is a clear patten of flipping between cores when it's not locked down. I would have though this constant thrashing would be more inclined to generate stutters but it appears to be the opposite. Odd.

Thanks for the replies.
I do indeed have 4gb of Ram and a Geforce 8600M GT (It's a laptop, Dell Inspiron 1520).
The dual clients run flawlessly in windows 7, which I dual boot with Kubuntu. 1 client runs smooth as silk in Kubuntu. Maybe even quicker than 7. But I just can't live without the second, so at the moment I'm still playing on 7. I absolutely know it's capable of running 2 at once, I do it daily.
I'll have a look into how to make sure they run on a core each. And about re-nicing it?

Couldn't find any info that made sense on how to run each client on a single core. Found some info on nice and renice, made no difference.
Switched Distro's to Linux Mint. Really really pleased with mint, memory and cpu usage lower. A lot lower. 1 client runs absolutely superb. And I mean flawlessly. Very very impressive. 2 clients though still a pain in the ass. First client hangs completely, second still stutters, not as badly, but still not playable. Add to that the first client locking up... well... back to windows again.
In a last hope that someone can throw some light onto why I cannot run 2 clients on linux, here's my install steps from start to finish :
Linux installed, either Kubuntu 9.10 or Mint 8 Install kernel 2.6.32 Install Nvidia drivers (latest from nvidia.com) Upgrade to latest ALSA drivers. No errors. Install latest wine from source. No errors. Install corefonts. Download "d3dx9_35.dll" and "d3dx9_36.dll" and place in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
Edit Registry (Current User)
[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "MaxFragmentUniforms"="1024" "MaxVaryings"="52" "MaxVertexUniforms"="1024" "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled"
Install eve (works flawlessly)
Disable Jukebox (Rename stop sound issues)
Play eve :
1 client running sweet as a nut on max details 1280x800 with full everything.
2 clients stutters badly and is unplayable (Client 1 stutters, client 2 is just horrible). Or in Mint's case, locks up client 1 then renders client 2 stuttery and unplayable.
Which leads me to conclude that Eve on Linux is actually heavier on system resources than running under Windows 7. I have no problems at all running 2 clients on max details under windows 7. I know it shouldn't be, but how else do you explain this?
Anyway, thanks for the support.

I run one copy for Tranquility and another entirely separate copy, including specifying a separate virtual desktop, for Singularity and get virtually no change in performance between running one client and two simultaneously. Even same framerate. I do, of course, have a dual processor and a decent GPU (Geforce 8800GT).
One thing to note is that, when doing the above, Eve creates two separate caches and settings folders.

Another suggestion someone else made is to reduce the texture and detail levels. Maybe you are running out of graphics memory.
My card has 512 MB and I personally run on medium level all the time. Never did think much of texturing.
