I hear Jita is where the party is.
How do I find it on the map? Do I put my cursor over each star or is there a search function? Haven't used the map that often (clinging to my home system like a whoos until now).
What's a cheap and fast noob ship that will get me there fast?
How long will it take from Amarr?
What can I expect there for someone that's 2 weeks into EVE? Death upon entry? Run the second I get in? Lag? All of the above?
I don't know what I want to do there but I thought it's worth checking out, since I'm still well below 900k skill points and will have a cheapy boat.

Easiest way to find Jita is as follows:
Type Jita into the search text box in the star map control box and hit Search. You will then see an entry for Jita on the list. Right click on that entry and select show on map or even set destination and you will see it highlighted on the map, with the route from your current location if you used set destination.

click on the icons "People and Places", then in the upcoming window select "Solar System" and type "Jita" in the box. In the results window right-click Jita and select "set destination". From then on follow the yellow gates or switch on autopilot. The station to go is Planet 4, Moon 4, Caldari Navy Academy Jita is only a few jumps away from Amarr. Don't expect anything spectacular, it's a trade centre. So lots of ships coming in and out of the station. Not really dangerous, just loads of people scamming (don't buy anything thats advertised in local) and rarely someone smartbombing at the gates.

Jita is simply the biggest trade hub. If something's sold in high sec, it will most probably sold in the Jita planet 4 moon 4 Caldari Navy Assembly Plant.
It's high sec, so you don't need to expect death unless you're carrying valuable cargo in a ship without any tank and move slowly enough to be caught. Don't carry hundreds of millions worth of stuff in a slow ship without putting suitable tank on it, and you will be fine. Many people claim that Jita is a hell considering lag, but I've personally not experienced any after CCP moved Jita to it's own server node.

Yup, so basically don't be naive, watch out for the prostitutes, and the guys selling fake Rolex's in creepy alleys. Got it!
How long will it take from Amarr thought? An hours? Minutes? Is it worth getting a smaller, faster ship?

If you use WTZ, it will probably take less than 30 minutes or so.

Between Amarr and Jita the only system to worry about is Domain / Niarja (0.5), as that's where all the pirates can be found on the gates. The Citadel / Uedama (0.5) between Jita and Sinq Laison / Dodixie & Essence / Oursalert is similar.
Pirates scan ships going by, looking for ones with expensive cargo worth enough to suicide gank. They usually have an industrial alt sitting by to scoop-up the cargo after CONCORD blasts them into oblivion.
You will notice lots of Freight Containers around the gates from freighters carrying enough cargo (billions of ISK) to make it worthwhile to gank with a dozen or so friends. I regularly carry just over a billion ISK through these areas in my Charon with no problems to date, but I wouldn't carry that much in a smaller ship; that's asking to be popped.
Note: by default Jita is on your avoid list. Personally I'd remove it and replace it with Rancer.

What is suicide gank? I'm guessing that's a suicide run on your boat?

Yes. If you attack someone in hisec that isn't a war target (or have kill rights on, or has stolen from you in the past 15 minutes), CONCORD will kill you as a consequence. You cannot avoid CONCORD.
Suicide gank means to attack and kill someone, then having CONCORD destroy them as a consequence.
If you are carrying 500 million of cargo, and they gank you, then roughly 250 million may drop for them to loot with another account. Insurance covers the ship they lost, and they take a bit of security level hit which they can easily regain.
They like to hang out in 0.5 systems as CONCORD response is slower than say 0.9 (Jita).

Jita is a trade hub. You go there to buy/sell stuff. There's not much else to do there (apart from suicide ganking). It's 9 jumps from Amarr, takes 5 minutes in a shuttle.

Minutes, unless you go in a battleship using autopilot. Unless you're carrying absolutely nothing of value and your route is going to be only high sec, never autopilot. You can set the destination for the autopilot put leave it off and travel manually, no matter what you fly you save lots of time. As someone said, 5 minutes in a fast ship, but it can also 15 in a very slow one. And to add to your list of very fine examples, don't keep your phone and wallet in your back pocket without having a shard metal object sticking out of it. Think of suicide ganking like kinda mugging. Don't give people a reason to do it, and it wont happen. Give people a reason to do it, and it's your own fault.
