I have been reading up on the life of a pirate and and to be honest it does sound interesting . However I am wondering if there is a down side to this chosen path ? Does the lower security rating limit the game if you chose the life of a pirate ? Are there other game play aspects that would be effected or totally removed from game play by living a pirates life ?
I would like to hear your thoughts on the life path of a pirate , the good the bad and the ugly .

Well there is the part where you can't ever go to highsec anymore (except for suicide ganking :smug: (unless you go grind sec status to 0.0, but that's a brain melting process)). And the part where anyone anywhere can shoot at you and sentries won't shoot them. But other than that, there isn't any downsides I can think of.
In fact, even these two aren't really much of a downside. The only highsec place of interest is Jita, which is accessible with a hauler alt (or shuttle), and people being able to shoot at you without sentries shooting back just means you get more fights.
Expect to be killed a lot early on though. If it's sitting on a gate/in a belt it's more often than not a trap, so until you get a good nose for these things... Well, rifters are cheap anyway. ---

You only need to grind to -1.9, but apart from that, see above..
Grinding to -1.9 is still boring as bat**** though.

I have been -10 for quite some time and to be honest it didnt matter much. You can stay in lowsec and have an alt fly in your goodies and ships. You can cruise through empire in a pod if you will. Also its nice to be a flashy red -10 and have WANTED on your pic. The thing you have to worry about though is that ppl can attack you in sight of sentryguns without getting shot by them. You will need a ship that can tank sentries, targets AND deal out some nice dps. Like a bs or bc but i prefer pocketbattleships like the Absolution or the Devoter wich is a great toy for lowsec with their insane tank abilities and the hic even has infinite point.
However due to a career change i need to be in empire for a while and i now raised my sec status to -1.60 or so just by shooting bs rats in 0.0. Its relatively simple and it doesnt take extremely long. Just kill one bs rat then go to your safespot cloak up and wait ten minutes for your sec status "hit" then continue process. Be carefull for any hostiles is really the only thing you need to worry about. Keep in mind that the sec status rise is a percentage, so going from -10 to lets say -9 goes pretty fast but the higher you get the slower it goes. Regards, Skin

Good to know that it is possible to rase your security rating :)
So do tell all , what's the largest prey you ever took down with a Frigate solo ?

Tears and Lolz are the pirates reward...
Seriously, you get whatever the wreck drops, or what you get from a ransomed pilot - assuming you do ransoms.

When your under -5 newer players and stuff will usually attack you if your in a smaller ship class and they think they will win easy. Like this, minding my own business on the station and I get shot at. So yea get a frig and learn how to use it well and have some fun!
Edit: Fixed the word out to how, wtf? Need coffee.

Wow, that's quite fail fit. Lows full of fitting mods *and* small guns. Why can't I get more of those?

As a pirate much of my time has been occupied with building a reputation, while my initial skills get to the point where I can take on other pirates in there own territory. But until then I can harass the locals in lower security highsec...can flipping and suicide ganking ftw
You will lose many ships, but each loss will prove a lesson that will make you a better pirate.

Piracy is great fun. Do what you want, shoot who you want, live free. The only real consequences to -5 and worse sec is that you cant go into high sec. Sentries are inconsequential, as if you want to gank people on gates, you already have to understand their mechanics. High sec is easily solved with a hauler alt, or a pirate corp/alliance (shameless plug).
If wanton destruction is what trips your trigger, piracy is great fun in Eve.

Some grate advice and info so far people
One thing I must say .....
There is a LOT to being a pirate ! Not only does one need to do a lot of research , one also needs to put a lot on the line . Seems to me pirates have gotten a bad wrap and have not been given enough credit for all the hard work that has gone into practicing there trade .
Pirates , I salute you

The penalties for general piracy are actually a lot easier to recover from than the penalties for participating in FW. |

FW = Faction Warfare.
Due to sporadic playtimes with rl, I tend to really gank in high sec these days, until I find a nice pie corp/alliance to call home *cough*
Suiciding can be very profitable if you pick your targets

From all that I have read regarding pirating it seems to me that the ship of choice is a frigate , for the most part , no ?
Is there a reason one would want a frigate over say a destroyer ?
Realistically what larger size class ship can a frigate take down on a solo ?

Most pirate corps fly battlecruisers and heavy interdictors in small gangs, much of the time either camping gates that have good traffic, camping stations with many people undocking or roaming around areas killing people at gates, belts, in missions etc.
If you're looking to go down that road then I recommend you do it right. Start training for a cruiser of your preferred race (any race except caldari is the general consensus) and have a look at:
This list of some of the pirate training corps in Eve. Mostly they're associated with a pirate corp and after learning the ropes in the training corp, many of them will offer you membership in their main corp.

Just make sure whoever you join has some logistics to bring in new ships and mods from a high sec trade hub, and you're golden. Or just create a hauler alt, takes a few days of training time.

Well here's hoping that one of the groups that I applied to gets back to me about joining .
After spending some time working on my skill tree and reading some of the pirate guides out there I am thinking that I am ready for my first hunt tonight !
Aside from groups can one find a solo pirate to buddy up with and learn from or is the group the better option ?

So tonight was the big night . After reading all I could find and after listening to all of you nice people out there it was finial time to get on out there and try my hand at being a pirate .
I thought long and hard about what I would take out for my first night hunting and decided to ease into things as it was most certain that any ship I took out was going to get popped . Realizing that I decided upon my Tristan .
I then proceeded to the nearest .4 and dropped a few scan bookmarks from which I then proceeded to scan from . Much to my disappointment my scans revealed no prey , however I did pick up two hunters . One was gate camping and the other was holding out in a belt . I then struck up a conversation with the one in the belt , asking how the night was going and such when a Battle Cruiser jumped right on top of the guy camping the belt . As quick as the BC wiped out the guy in the belt he warped out , leaving a cargo container floating in space .
I took the opportunity and warped on over and scooped the goods .
Not quite what I was expecting for my first night out , but hey at least I didn't get blasted :P

After a few more outings I can sure appreciate the need for well placed bookmarks for scanning (directional scan is your friend !! It pays to use it !!) and jumping . This tip alone has saved me BIG TIME ! I can't imagine just hopping blindly from one belt to another ever again .
Sadly yet again I have only found other hunters , no prey :( However do to a well placed bookmark and some scans I was able to jump in the middle of two BC , open a floating cargo container and then hightail it out of there . Sadly the container was empty , oh well , chalk it up to experience

Don't look at them as other hunters, just look at them as potential prey.
You'll find the ratio of pirates to non-pirates in low sec is a tad skewed, basically just hit who you can and take whatever fate presents to you.

I would but so far they have either been paired up or greatly out classing my ship .
I must say , it is fun toying with them if I can't blast them :)
What I need is to make some other pirate friends that I can go out hunting with .
I tried sending a few evemail messages to two different groups that were looking for new recruits but as of yet , no reply .
