I like how Raivi just completely made up an acronym and kept calling Ancillary Shield Boosters "ACBs"
that won't confuse anyone |

Yah, he can come back whining when he's named Mymh, and every damn american keeps calling you "Mimph" or "Meeemph". It always puzzled me when people have letter that isn't pronounced (like Gila, wth, there is a G there, of course we will pronounce it?). Gets even more mad when they start adding letters that isn't even there, hah! Where's the P (or F, for that matter) in my name?
Vanakov isn't even hard, at least I'll cut people some slack, having a name like this.. but in your case.. they must surely just pull your leg for the sake of it, hehe. |

Abbadon - Abba-don I love when people pronounce Abbadon "ab-add-on." It makes me realize most people on the intertubes can't read. The reading is fine. It's the not speaking ancient Hebrew that makes it a bit awkward to pronounce. |

heh, this is fun.
Abaddon - "a bad one" is pretty close.
Jaguar... that's a south american kitty (well a big one). how do the south americans pronounce that? "haguar"?
And just in every DnD campaign we ever played scimitar got mangled to hell and back. try "schmentar" (german reading rules) on for size. do we have any arabic speakers around? and is this their name for the sword or is it a european misstag (deliberate)? |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scimitar claims it is probably just a bastardisation of the arabic term |

ngga please icelandic is nearly identical to ancient norse, you danes, norwegians and swedes are the scrubs in this scenerio our pronunciations and spellings are far more accurate and superior to yours !! |

No. The origins go even further back than that, we'd have to involve the german folktraditions (i.e. old German) to get it more accurate. The "problem" we face here is that the most famous of the older compilations, happens to be icelandic. Given that, it's certainly a possibility that Iceland managed to maintain the old language we spoke on mainland, before our fugitives and scum fled to the isle over there (it's actually worse than the Australian situation, where prisoners were deported. We had murderers and thiefs that fled to Iceland.. and people who tried to avoid certain death, haha).
TL;DR there's a possility the "true" (if there's such a thing) pronounciation, would have more similarities with old German, than with old Icelandic. I'll give you one thing tho; even tho the oldest norse mythology appears on mainland, and even tho Iceland was populated by people actually coming from mainland, there's an obvious risk that the mainland languages have been more tainted over the years.
Edit; Oh and this makes it even more fun, when you realise how most of the people that is so anal about pronounciations.. are often English-speaking, or Americans, and irony is, as pointed out above, the Germans would have more 'right' to explain the 'proper' pronounciation. If anyone, non-scandinavian, that is. shiptoastin' liek a baws |

Hmm I don't know about all that I just know I can read 1000 year old texts from Norway / Iceland / Sweden because our language hasn't changed much over the years. Of course you can always go farther back, but I figure Icelandic's about as good as you're likely to easily get when it comes to "correctly" pronouncing words and names from the Norse mythology. |

As the old german fart that i-¦m i totaly support your post.
Also most ships would gain strenghts through their old-german-pronounciated (?) name. We have / had a lot of strong letters - like the "rollin-¦ R" (especially down in the south of bavaria).
