My corp has set up a pos in a C4 wormhole with small/medium/large projectile batteries. What is the best type of ammo to fill the guns with and should I have different types of ammo for auto cannons than artillery. Thanks

I"m not sure but I think large guns in a wormhole is a bit overkill. Large guns use x-large ammo and are only really used to kill cap ships. I doubt you'd have many cap ships in a C4. If you fit med and small guns and have a few extra anchored and offline, that should do it.
Different ammo types provide different ranges. Fool around with the different types and see what works best.

This. Getting a cap fleet to attack a wormhole pos is very difficult and time consuming. BS fleets will be much more likely and you should use med guns for those.

Ammo types have no effect on gun battery ranges, so use the hardest hitting shortest range ammo. For a min pos, get emp, phased plasma and fusion, those will provide a nice balance of damage types against all tanks. Spring for the rf version.

Is this true? EVEHQ and some of the other POS builder programs calculate gun ranges based off of ammo's range modifier. Are they just wrong?

For POS sentries, ammo does NOT affect range, only damage.
Please read Fitz's POS fitting thread in the Science and Industry forum. If you can't easily find it, it is linked in the sticky at the top of the forum. Test results of range and tracking have been posted there (almost everything except ECM is measured from the tower, not the module) S&I is where most POS discussion happens.
EDIT: Oh and your answer is to use half your sentries EMP and half Phased Plasma; this does all 4 types of damage. If you have a lot of sentries, then you might want to consider adding Fusion and Titanium Sabot into some sentries to increase explosive and kinetic damage.
