I am just starting out on my Career in Research and Invention and have a question. Can I have positive standings with more than one corp at a time. I would like to be able to earn Data cores from more than one Corp, say Lai Dai and Ishukon (sp). I realize I will have to work up my standings with both but is it possible to be on good terms with both so I can make a variety of Data cores for my invention process.

Yes, absolutely you can have high standings with multiple corps.
Note that faction standings will go down if you start gaining faction standings with an enemy faction. So watch out for storyline missions, they will hurt some faction standing while boosting others.
Faction standings will also drop significantly if you blow up faction ships in your missions. So don't take missions which involve blowing up Amarr, Caldari, Minmatar or Gallente navy ships.
If you grind just NPC corp missions with no storylines, you should have no problems. Ishukone don't mind at all if you run missions for Lai Dai or Republic Fleet, or even Federation Navy.

Note that by default you can only use one research agent at a time.
You will need to train Research Project Management to get one extra agent per level (maximum = 6 agents), this in turn requires Research V, Laboratory Operations V and Science III.
The prereqs are all Tier 1 skills so you are looking at about 10 days of training to get them.
Research Project Management is a Tier 8 skill

As you gain standings with each corporation you have research agents with you can then stop doing research for a lower level agent and select a higher one. The higher they are the more points you get per day. Make sure you trade in all your research points with the old agent for data cores before you switch though or you will lose all the ones you accumulated since last you "bought" data cores from that agent.
One other thing to consider is that you can run a daily mission for your research agent that typically doubles the research points they provide you. In order to do that with multiple agents you probably want to have these agents located fairly close together. This all really depends on how badly you want those extra research points and your tolerance for jumping about EVE but is something to consider when choosing agents. Even though it may sound like you must do these missions - you don't have to - the agent will keep researching for you. Look in your journal and you will note a daily increase in the number of research points you have accumulated as well as the rate you are accumulating them at. Note that running these daily missions gets you nothing but the extra research points - there is no standing increase as part of that - so - if you want to increase your standings with that agents corporation - you need to run missions for one of their non-research agents as well.
Also a factor is the level to which you have trained the skill they are researching. If you train to Level V - you will get the maximum you can get from that agent.
Lastly there is a Story Line Mission you will be offered from a local Story Line Agent every 16 missions you run. Some of these story line missions are much more lucrative than others. Make sure you note if there are any asteroids in the mission and which ones they are. These Story Line Missions are from regular Story Line Agents - so - you while your missions for the research agent get you no standings increase - these Story Line Missions will increase your faction standing.

Read this article I wrote in the Tribune
It explains a neat shortcut for gaining standings with a faction, which reduces your need for corporate standings (Ishukone and Lai Dai are the same faction - Caldari). ______________________ Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University. |

I looked up on R&D agents on the EVE agents site because I noticed the Khanid Innovation had only 2 level 2 R&D agents. I found 100 R&D agents in toatl with a plain serch for R&D agents and all were level 1 or level 2.
So my question is are all R&D agents level 1 or 2? Or did I do my search wrong?

Essentially, you did your search wrong. The eve-agents site will only return a maximum of 100 results for any query, so chances are you were sorting by level/required standings ascending (or similar) and hit the limit before the list reached level 3 agents.
Try and apply more specific filters and you'll see there are plenty of level 3 and 4 R&D agents (as well as some level 5 ones listed, though I don't know if these are actually in game or not).

:-( Then the Khanid Empire has only has two level 2 R&D agents in total. Ugh; I have a bunch more grinding to do then. I guess I will go with Kaalakiota Corporation since they have a good courier agent near my base of operations.
