Hi all! Despite the title, this is actually a serious thread!
Ive made previous posts, however, in short:
Im currently doing a university paper on online identities, and well - Where else would i go, other than the might eve-o forums! My question for you all is this: Why do you care about these forums? Not in the case of finding ship setups, and such, but more so...
What spurs you into contributing on these pages, when you gain nothing? You dont get any form of 'incentive', so what pushes you to post ship setups, help newbies, or flame newbies. What is your purpose?
Whilst this can potentially be seen as a negative post, my question is a serious one.
My interests lay in regards to how a person wants others to perceive them, and such. We each have our own characters, many more than one. Many the opposite sex. My paper is aiming at unearthing some of these questions, and I need your help to achieve it!
What makes you contribute to the community in Eve Online?

Quite honestly I make the dumbest posts just to see who will actually react to it.
In psychology, or internal/external communication classes, there are different forms of listening. One of which, is the ambush listener. They specifically listen to target ideas, beliefs, and feelings towards a fact, opinion, or thought. I am a ambush listener when it comes to the internet.
Ironically, I can't stand people who think illogically or have problems using common sense. I've found that most of these people had issues growing up within their social communication networks (a social communication network could be your geographical location family, friends, schools). Perhaps they were beaten as kids, maybe they didn't have parents who provided positive feedback, who knows. It could also be that they spent their lives learning from people who had these problems, and in turn through interaction of these people, took on the roles because it's the only thing they knew.
In the real world, it is frowned upon telling someone how much they lack common sense, or think illogically for a multitude of reasons. They may commit suicide, they may get angry because of some underlying anger with their self prospective and come after you, in some places, you can be sued. Then, then there is the internet where you can unleash at your will. You could say it's an outlet, with no consequences other than the possible ban for this particular type of personality trait.
To be honest, I made a serious post in CAOD yesterday about the moronic "don't post or you will pay" type attitude that most alliance heads throw out. I think there were 3 or 4 constructive posts - but I stopped looking at it. A lot of posts were blind in which someone got so involved in what I wrote, that they made absolutely no sense. They couldn't see it, refused to see it, or just outright ignored it because they rather monopolize the conversation on another scale of some sort.
Another post, someone actually took the time to research my character to see if I was an alt or not. Now, because of what I wrote, they took time out of their day, because they were so involved, be it out of anger, frustration, tears, or interest, that they did research on the internet name of Kikki Di'je. Other posts just claimed I was some IRC alt - which I'm not you tools - which I found quite amusing.
I could go on and on, but TLDR - yada yada yada. 9 times out of 10, you can do your thesis paper on a single post from an internet forum, all depending on how you present yourself. From the horrible whatever language to English posts, to dribble, to drunken posting, It's quite fantastic to be honest, good luck with your paper.

I read the forum to find out more about the game itself. 80% of what get posted here is drivel, but the other 20% contains useful information, generally.
I rarely post, but when I do, I'm trying to clarify something or learn something, and sometimes to argue for or against a point somebody made. If I know something relevant to a question, I'll post it up as well.
Reading the forums is like reading the newspaper to me. I'm looking to find out what's going on in the game. It's a shame that so much of what gets posted here is pure garbage.

helps me learn things about eve, and well my computer goes poopy in high stress situations, like 2 fps outside of jita. I really don't want to go pvping and have that happen. and I like to keep the gangs small enough that having effects on is important, need to see nos/neuts and whatnot.
plus I can ramble on and troll people.
but really I dunno, I picked up forum whoring in some other game and it hasn't died.

^^This^^ At the beginning, I was a sponge soaking up every detail of the game so that I could advance and become a better player. I still learn something every day, and if its not redundant, I'll put my two Isk in to expand on the topic.
The forums are a way to play Eve when not in-game. Indeed, you gain perspective, gather knowledge, and go back refreshed with a more intricate plan or angle you didn't have before.

+1 to old school social networking.
Its partly because of who I am: I post on the eve-o forums because its a group of like minded people where I can converse. Most of the stuff I post in GD isnt exactly hardcore eve-related news and events, but me posting to communicate with people about a subject that im interested in. I do, however, keep out of COAD, just because its horrible.
Also, gain is relative - Why does one hang out with friends? This is largely the same reason why I find myself on these forums. There are people here that I can almost consider friends.. or.. forum-friend-people at least.
As for my online identity: my online identity is largely a picture of who I actually am; It wouldnt be too far off to say that the eve forums knows more about me than most of my 'real life' friends do..
Er anyway, im getting off track here. OHGODS BELOW THIS LINE IS MY SIG !!!! SRSLY! Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. Lance is also amarrian. Thats 3 evil points |

A lot of people use the forums to gain visibility that they otherwise would not have in game. The vast majority of people who post in virtually every topic created would otherwise live in relative EVE obscurity.
No one gives two squirts of pee about an empire hugging freighter pusher or a high sec industry character until they start posting in every thread that pops up.
