Someone I know wants to use a 3rd party email address through their AOL internet connection. After explaining at length just how much AOL suck, I tried to help out.
Outlook Express currently will receive mail (pop3) fine, but will not send (smtp).
Have set the smtp server to smtp.aol.com, port 587, with outgoing authentication username/pwd to the master AOL screen name/pwd.
I get a "not owned by user" error in OE, which googleing fails to turn up anything useful.
After about 30mins of googling I thought I'd try those nice, friendly people in the EVE forums.

sometime to send mail the username is the [email protected] instead of just user screen name and pass.. had this problem sending mail once, also sometimes you gotta click secure for sending in outlook on some servers. but seems you did that?

You cannot do this.
For anti-spam reasons, AOL will not allow you to relay a 3rd party domain through their SMTP servers.
Trust me, I do this for a living.
The best thing to do would be to find someone you can pay to relay your mail for you.

When you say cannot do this I take it you mean wih AOL specifically?
Most ISPs allow you to do so but make you relay outgoing through their (rather than the 3rd party domain) smtp server using your ISPs login/pwd. BT have a whitelist you have to approve before allowing the relay in addition to this. Was kinda hoping there was some similar feature in AOL.

You can, but you have to use the abomination that is the webmail interface, instead of using a proper mail client like the rest of the civilised world.

its the same service that you get from the homephone and broadand from the post office (uk) while the price is nice for some of it other its not so nice also they are using the bt back bone like so many other compains i would say when you look for a new isp ask if you can use hotmail/gmail on outlook.
if the sales team says yes and you find out later its not the case then you can exit your contact as it was miss sold.

Does your webmail interface offer local and offsite archival and backup, customisable spam definitions, on-the-fly GPG encryption, decryption and key management, groupware, complex threads, etc... ?
I've yet to find a webmail service that offered the most basic filtering I use today: All GPG encrypted and signed mail goes into "actual mail" folder,
subscribed mailing list messages go into "mass mail" folder, everything else goes into "potential crap" folder. Potential crap is then further filtered for spam. Also being able to save everything into a cross-platform compatible local mail file. Those are the most basic requirements for anyone who uses mail for anything more than forum registrations. Not one modern webmail service offers them.
