AMD has got the best bang for the buck. You can get a quad core for under $100. Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |

He might have a bit of a problem wedging an amd chip into an intel board. Though tis true that they do have uber cheap quads that ain't that bad performance wise. However a q9550 will still walk all over it.

According to Tomshardware.com The AMD 965 beats the Q9550 for the most part, That being said, the other Intel chips are all really expensive.
Q9550 or AMD 965 are you best bang for the bucks at the moment.

The Intel i3 530 dual core @ 2.93 ghz (Socket LGA 1156) can be overclocked to a whopping 4.2ghz. They are ú89 in UK. Imo AMD Phenoms are crap due to their dire performance in Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, which i play most of the time.
I have a quad core i5 750 @ 4 ghz. The quad cores are mostly for epeen as i know of no game that fully\properly utillises all four cores.

BFBC2 is a multi-processor capable.
And Since I use CS4 a lot with some large photos, I need a quad.
Regardless, as more and more games come out multi-threaded, quads will start to be superior . Get the Q9550 and call it a day :)

Edited by: bff Jill on 09/03/2010 00:32:39 i would get an E8400 over the higher ones, since the 8400 is, if i recall, the last upgrade in cache and other things, the higher ones are only slightly higher stock clocks, which doesn't matter that much since you can overclock all the high end core 2 duos by quiet a bit even with stock cooling.
That is assuming you are locked into that socket already, there are better options in the same price range. But the E8400 is a nice processor.

you should just upgrade to an i5 or i7. The 800 i7 series is good if you're going to also do things that aren't gaming, as the hyperthreading can offer a small boost in it's ability to do multiple things. The i5 can be overclocked a bit further than the 860 though. Also, no point in getting the 870, as the 860 can be OC'ed to about 3.6GHz pretty easily. _________________________________________________________________ You just lost the game, my friend... Go with an AMD 550 or 555 BE, most are unlocking to quadcores that are in line with the 955 and 965 phenoms. Both the 550 and 555 are around $100. TBH that's the best bang for your buck out right now!

I've got an e8400 sitting in this computer right now, never had a problem with it, bought it about two years ago and it was a bargain then so it will be even better value now, 2x 3.0ghz is going to last you a long long time before you need to upgrade again. |

why a dual core? quad cores are the new standard. and dual cores are the new single cores, single cores are the new piece of crap, and 6 core is the new "WTF why do you need that". i got a 860 and love it. can easily push it from 2.8 GHz to 3.38GHz on air, i don't push it further because i don't need that much. i wont need a new CPU for awhile, glad a bought it.

What is your definition of really expensive? If i look at dutch shops i5 750 goes for 164 euro, i wouldnt call that really expensive, thats a ***ping 10 euros more than the AMD 965 you call cheap. And looking at some benchmarks it offers significantly better performance.

Fair enough. At a lan party i was at last weekend a mates Phenom 3.2 ghz quad core had the slowest max_sp in a game of shards. A core duo at 2ghz was faster. I shall ask him how his PC is setup.
.
Does BF BC 2 really use quad cores? If you have a second monitor run taskmanager when playing the game. How are all four cores being utillised? AFAIK no game properly allocates threads to four cores. Supreme Commander Forged Alliance has a core maximiser utillity but still the overall CPU utillisation on my PC does not go above 45% when the max_sp is going down near 0.

Whilst a quad core is going to do little for your gaming pleasure over a dual core(my old cpu was an e6750 and it ran 8 player supcom just dandy) it's going to do wonders for your overall computing experience if you like to do lots of stuff at once along with your gaming.
