Hello :)
So some of you know that eve works pretty well when running in linux through cedega/wine except for one minor detail. The mouse cursor doesn't show up.
So I've made a little proggy that draws a crosshair at the mouse's current location which makes eve totally playable and I'd like to share it with you.
http://faustnet.net/~q3/evemouse-1.tar.bz2
Read the comments at the top of the source, compile it with 'make' then run it in the background and you should be set.
Some notes: -The problem where it won't render one of the fonts still exists for me. -Fullscreen mode gets you a lot more fps. -The in-game fps monitor lowers framerate for me by about 10fps. -Rendering portraits locally crashes the game. -The 'graphics' tab in the menu breaks.
It's pretty playable in my opinion, I wouldn't go into any risky fights while playing in linux though.
If you have any questions/comments feel free to ask.
Enjoy.

BeuBii,
Thanks for the evemouse program. Even if I'd gotten eve working well enough, evemouse was still needed to make things happen ingame.
Its much appreciated and Maybe it can be modded to only be active when the cursor is within the bounaries of the eve window. (if you're in window mode), because it leaves a trail of chicken tracks across all the other windows ;) I'll take a look at the source and see if I can manage that little piece of it.
Thanks again,
Papol

Ok, I got Eve to work, but it's buggy As hell. I'm referring to Exodus 2.03.3106 using linuxfromscratch with kernel 2.6.9 nvidia 6111 cedega 4.0
ok, so what I had to do to be able to log in was to copy the whole cache directory off a windows machine, where the "get portraits from server" option was ticked, for some reason prefs.ini is as helpful as a duck with a gun. Ok now I was able to enter the eve world but there are just soo many buggy things, for instance as you mentioned the options menu works, but if the tab is on graphics opening the options menu will result in a crash. Entering a station results in a crash, leaving a station however works. Switching to fullscreen via alt-enter works although not the other way round. Everything that has to do with portraits ultimately fails and crashes the game, so clicking the no-portraits option helps. I have to disagree on the "pretty playable" unless you simply want to and do basic stuff. These aren't very big issues I assume, and should be easily fixed either via patch for cedega or eve.
ohh and thanks for the evemouse program, that really helps alot !
Best regards Ingimar

I am tempted to dual boot my machine with (currently) Windows XP Home edition and Linux (SuSe/Redhat latest versions) although i face a problem, my wireless network is stubbern, if i do anything to the network, it will not work and takes a very long time to fix.
So the question remains is: Will dual booting with Linux change anything with my current network configuration?

http://faustnet.net/~q3/evemouse-1.tar.bz2
can someone post that file again? it seems down to me.
I can see a nice cursor in the game, but unfortunately its a mile away from the real cursor position. that makes the game quite hard to play :) In windowed mode the cursor is in the right position, but performance is bad.
my setup:
Fedora Core 3 cedega 4.2 - official binary using "Desktop" = "1024x768" in .transgaming/config

Hi Guys, first... pretty thx to BeuBii for the cursor!!! EVE is still not realy playable for me although i use the actual nVidia Driver and Cedega 4.2. Lot of Text just appears in white Blocks, orginal mouse cursor only flickers and (login)screen just shows up like in 16 color mode . So i always switch back to WinXP where i get all the praised benefits of the "great" graphic engine . On the other hand i just figured out that playing eve with older graphic driver on win it ends with the same result as like in linux so in my opinion its the offered graphic driver for linux why this problems happens on linux. if the drivers would be actual like those for win it should be good.. i bet on it

Wow! The perfect solution... or I expected it to be. I just finished installing Slackware and I had Cedage installpkg'd... and EVE booted up BEAUTIFUL, I was impressed it started at all. I get to the login screen and I see there's no cursors.. I play with the WINE and Cedega options, and I didn't see any change. It was the extended downtime then, for the server>client patch, and I couldn't wait to actually get in the game, even without a cursor.
Finally, I see this thread with a solution, and when the forums are back up I download the repacked link for BuiBii's source... and while the cursor gobbling up the screen was a little irritating to look at, I ignored it an executed the EVE binary. I see I need to upgrade, so I'm "Oh.. sure!".
So... after the update... I see something a little too (ironic?) for my comfort. The process drops out when it gets to the login screen.. and the logs report...
