Unless I'm missing something, these ammo changes are pretty much exactly what they did in dominion (for projectiles at least).
Look at the date of that blog.
Why did they wait so long to change them? Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |

Because if they had done it back then, projectiles would have been made good.
By first changing all the other weapon types, they can now safely boost projectiles so they are on the same level as 5 years ago. :)
Its brilliant really.

Welcome to ccp's 'arms race' spin on balancing. There will always be a 'good' race or weapon set and always a 'bad' one. Gallente used to be the undisputed king of pvp so now they get their time in the bush league as minmatar and amarr are the top pvp dogs atm.

Yes, the highest dps guns in the game definitely need a boost....
And the longest range guns, that are also are the lowest powergrid long range weapons also need a boost....
People can complain about anything.

The highest DPS guns happen to be the Shortest range guns, on armor tanking slow ships.
Plus the web Nerf... Plus the nano nerf...
Yeah I can see how that can't possible be a problem.
And the best Railgun sniper happens to be the.... Rokh.
In fact, Caldari do hybrids better then Gallente. :)
But I do have to admit, the Thanatos and Nyx are by far the sexiest. I can live with those. I <3 my Thanny

That's because balance is a state of mind and not an exact science. There will always be ppl who think what ever they use isn't strong enough and what ever the enemy uses is stronger. It's a feeling, it's not like you can say hey look hybrids are 45% balanced they need 5% more. Everyone just says I don't feel strong enough and when you "fix it" the next person is gonna say hey now my lasers don't feel strong enough anymore. ----------------------------------------------- Free Trade Corp - Flash page

I think this guy may be a troll, but I'll bite anyway:
The reasons for blasters and rails being considered the worst of the weapons is different for each, so I'll hit em seperately:
Blasters: Not actually the highest dps weapons in the game (at least not at BS size where most of the complaints are), torps outdamage them, at farther range, with variable damage types, and no cap consumption. Granted, torps have their own list of problems, but they aren't nearly as bad. The big problem with blasters stems from 2 problems: Problem 1: Their damage projection is horrible; by far the worst in the game. Blasters outdamage lasers by a factor of less than 20%, assuming you're within the optimal of blasters, which is somewhere in the area of 3km, not an easy range to get into, let alone maintain, for any BS. Lasers by comparison give up 20% of the blasters' dps in exchange for something like 8-9 times the range. A 20% nerf to damage for a 900% buff to range....hmmm.... Then count in the fact that lasers, without needing to wait the usual 10 seconds, can increase their optimal from 15-20km to 40+ by using scorch, that's a big advantage, especially in battleship fights where being able to apply dps quickly is often what decides the winner.
Basically the problem here is that yes they do more damage, but the damage they do is so difficult to apply to a target that unless you're camping a station blasters will always lose out in applyable dps when compared to the other weapon systems.
Problem 2: When CCP introduced the most recent nano nerf, they unwitting screwed blasters over completely. Reason being that blasters have always had the worst relative tracking (tracking within their optimal), and this used to be compensated for by having webs that could knock your speed down by 90%. CCP decided that this was too much, and changed it to 60% instead. What does this mean for blasters? Well it means that they now have to track targets moving 4 times as fast as they were before, which does not bode well for blaster users.
TLDR: 1.2X damage in exchange for 9X range is not worth it, web nerf makes it really hard to hit things even in optimal.
Railguns: Fights don't usually happen at 249k. Being able to hit out that far is nice, but utterly useless 90% of the time. If you're in a mixed fleet with people of all races ships, you're going to be engaging at the range of the worst optimal guns you've got. You've got the worst DPS, and the worst volley damage of all the long range weapons. The guns may take less PG, but the ships that use them have less to begin with, so that's a moot point. |
