I start by saying I am not a newbie so I find having to ask this question embaressing. I keep getting the Storyline mission "Materials for war preparation" which asked to collect stuff like Omber. Short of buying the Omber - for a fortune I do not seem to be able to mine it. I usually end up letting the mission expire. Can anyone help.

That mission requires different ore at different levels. Level 1 wants veldspar, level 2 wants scordite, level 3 wants omber and level 4 wants kernite. Omber and kernite are only available in certain areas of space. If I remember correctly, omber is found naturally in Gallente space. You can also find it in gravimetric exploration sites. So, if you want to mine it, either learn to probe or move to where it's found for a while.
Now, because it shows up for storyline missions everywhere some enterprising players will buy it in bulk where it's mined and ship it to mission hubs in other regions of space. You will pay a premium for this, which is what you're finding. However, given that the mission typically gives you a decent +3 implant which you can sell for more than the Omber costs, I wouldn't bother personally. I'd go find the cheapest price in the region, buy 4-5 missions worth, and store it in the station where your storyline mission agent resides.
When you get to level 4 missions you'll get to go through this again, except they want 8,000 kernite for that one. By the way, you find kernite in Amarr space. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Mission reward implant worth roughly in the 8-12 million isk range, depending on the implant and where you are. They're always +3 attribute implants.
Omber in the 100 isk/unit range * 1000 = ~100,000 isk.
Let's assume that you're in a really bad region and the omber is 500 isk/unit... it costs you 500,000 isk for the omber for one mission.
By ignoring the mission you lose something in the region of 7.5 million isk, quite possibly substantially more.
That said you can mine omber in some Gallente systems, haul it in from a trade hub like Jita, mine it in wormhole space gravimetric sites or in some high sec gravimetric sites found via exploration. Note that raw omber price is propped up heavily by this mission, it's one of the least profitable ores to mine if you're looking to refine it into minerals.

As i feel in a good mood today...
Go to Noghere (Gallente highsec), either in a industrial and buy a bulk of omber for a rediculous low price, or go there in your mining ship and do the job yourself.
No big secrets beeing told...

As one of those who bring Kernite from Amarr (I like to make lots of money off missioning *and* missioneers ) I can tell you that the price is high but:
- the material has to be carried unrefined. Expecially Kernite takes HUGENORMOUS room when unrefined
- the material comes from a most distant place
- the two above mean that a freighter has to be used (and its cost paid) for any serious sales operation.
- the freighter has a purchase cost and an operation cost (including having to use a pilot for the 1 hour+ of time it takes to fly it from Amarr to Minmatar lands)
- the whole business has also the hinderance that the involved materials are a poor choice, that is a miner has to mine them and not what sells well (ie scordite) and this is another cost.
- finally, the purchase cost has a lower limit: it cannot ever be set to be anywhere near the amount the same miner could make by refining and selling the stuff. IE if refining 1 kernite I make X isk fast (can resell the refined minerals in Amarr), the price for that same kernite bit cannot ever go below that X (plus costs etc).

You'll also find that in general what you pay for the Kernite is dwarfed by the value of the +3 implant

What he just said. I just buy it from rens at about 1-2 mill and get an implant I immediately sell for 8-10 mil..Not bad for 5 mins work.

Also keep things like omber and kernite visible on one of your overview setups. Several missions (Enemies Abound 1 of 3 for example) have it floating around in their deadspace pockets...

Edited by: Delenne Sheridan on 11/03/2010 16:16:52 Just buy the ore, you get far more in reward that you spend on the ore.
I just had one, wanted 8000 omber. I bought it, was given a implant, sold that for 3 times the cost of the omber....Works for me..If you just happen to mine as well, it is even more profit. its actually the easiest money you can make in the game.

Omber is often found in mission sites, as has been said. Before you turn in the mission click your overview to 'default - mining' and it will show which type of 'roids are about.
Train an alt up to do some mining with a Retriever, it will be worth the investment.

Confirming kernite is a pain in the ass. I have an orca, and it can't hold enough kernite for more than a 5-6 of Material for War Prep.

Be glad there are none that call for Arkonor; I can fit all of about 1600 units of Arkonor in my Mammoth. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

If your mission station is semi-popular and gives that mission often, while there is no omber for sale, it may even be worthwhile to haul in more than you personally need and sell it for profit to other mission runners.
Where there's high demand and low supply...
