Edited by: Eddie Gordo on 11/03/2010 21:05:46 It has been rumoured since fanfest that Dust 514 would be using the Unreal 3 engine for Dust 514, CCP have recently confirmed that this is the case.
They have also revealed that Dust 514 will also feature technology from geometrics called "englighten". Enlighten is basicly a really cool dynamic lighting technology that was first demonstrated in the Incarna (walking in stations) preview.

Welcome
You also have a double-for in the first paragraph near the end.

I don't know if I'd call it "rumoured" – they stated it pretty outright at fanfest. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I spotted that too but the page is cached and wont update for a few mins yet.
Anyone got any coments on the actual content of the article? I mean It has been rumoured for quite some time, but I think its quite good news as being based on Unreal Engine will mean a PC port should be quite quick if CCP ever cave to "popular demand" and do it on PC too.

CCP never gave an official comment at fanfest. I heard roumours on the interwebs about Unreal before I had sapphrine conduct an interview with Hilmar and Atli Mar Sveinsson. At the time they had no official comment, I guess a dev must have blurted it out before they were ready to actually announce it.

its a good enginge to use, although id have gone with the crysis engine tbh Signature graphics that may only contain your character name, corporation logo, corporation or personal slogan or other text that is directly related to your in-game persona, or content directly related to Eve Online. Well, Encarta, for one, was discontinued a couple of months ago, iirc. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Its a console release, and to the best of my limited knowledge the crysis engine isnt on xbox or ps3. Crysis is a lovely engine though :)

The moast awesome thing though is that m\kb support is built in to the engine and will be a cinch to mod in at a later date at least for the ps3. But I'm betting ccp simply enables it and so in a single stroke silence all the pc snobs like me who own a console but think fps + thumbsticks is a blasphemy onto competative shooter gaming.

One of the reasons I can see why CCP went with this engine is because you can add technology to it. That leads me to think we will have a common social area for the consoles and the PC...please! Don't forget to "fully load" the textures! lol ~sghq.com~ |

What happened to them building their own engine, for use in Incarna and World of Darkness MMO?

Maybe the Incarna footage we have already seen always used Unreal, but they only talked about the dynamic lighting they were working on with Geometrics.

I don't think they ever stated that the incarna and wod engine was going to be used for dust as they are both completely different from a shooter and would make little use of the unreal engines capabilities. However the art assets can be freely interchanged and as that is the lions share of any games development budget I can see ccp sharing assets between the incarna and dust teams as it will make both of them seem to be the same game visually.

ôAmbulationö is a new technology being introduced into the CCP Core Technology Platform.
This engine will manage the full-body representation of humans, creatures, and other non-player-characters (NPC) for both indoor and outdoor game environment settings. Ambulation includes R&D in Artificial In-telligence, Animation Systems, Advanced Character Rendering Technology, Crowd Simulation, Navigation, and Pathfinding for agents in indoor environments. Ambulation will be used to deliver the new EvE Online feature ôWalking in Stationsö, and will be the technology foundation for the World of Darkness character system.
That decided on tried and tested UE 3 for their console title is fine with me. I want them to finish "Ambulation", not try and port it to Xbox 360.
But damnit, moar Ambulation, less Dust info please :D

Something I don't quite understand - the demo we saw at fanfest, was this using the UT3 engine?

Yes, Dust 514 is Unreal 3 engine.
Incarna use the Trinity engine.
Art assets are shared between the engines hence the similar look of the characters in both.

You have a stunningly narrowminded idea of what the unreal engine is capable of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games

I know that its has been used for many other types of games than a shooter and did it well but obviously ccp feels its not up to what they want for incarna. However its probably the best premade engine for a shooter so why would they feel the need to waste money and try to reinvent it when they need all the smart people making incarna from the ground up?

My guess is that in order to do that they would need to integrate the unreal engine into the EVE client which would be considerably more difficult to do. Who knows though maybe one of the reasons that they delayed Incarna for so long is that they decided to do just that. It would certainly save them a ton of development time in the future.
Another factor could be that they would then have to pay a significant licensing fee in order to add it to the current EVE client.
This is of course just speculation. We'll have to see what CCP will say on the last day of GDC.

One of the main reasons why Incarna got delayed is becuase it was originally DX10 only, but as the adaptation rate of DX10 was far below the expectations CCP had to add DX9 support as well.

The use of the UR3 engine will allow for better use of both major console platforms currently on the market.
and to incarna, well they don't need more than a third of the unreal engine, so why use it.
anyway I think CCP is going in the right direction to make a great game

It's called Google Adsense. There is nothing the website owner (Eddie) can do to completely remove the possibility of an ISK Seller advertisement appearing. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008
