Any content in this thread will be provided in as much detail as possible in accordance with NDA restrictions.
I have been following the development of Dust 514 quite closely and the whole concept of a cross-platform game intrigued me. Even more awesome the fact that it is being done on EVE Online, the best damn MMO in Space today. HOORAH!
While I cannot divulge too many specific details about the game itself, I can describe my experiences so far.
First, a bit of history. I was brought up around PCGÇÖs and never owned a console as a child. The very first console I owned was a 360 which was purchased about 4-5 years ago (maybe longer). Naturally I prefer the PC to a console and very often got involved in heated debates about why PCGÇÖs are better for gaming than consoles. I would say I am predominantly an FPS gamer with a strong FPS background including games such as Q2, Q3, SOF, SOF2, UT3, CSS, GA GǪ the list goes on. Naturally I was sceptical about the whole GÇÿFPS on a consoleGÇÖ choice. Having played other FPSGÇÖs such as COD/Halo on the 360, I was somewhat apprehensive about Dust 514 on the PS3 and like many other gamers, was angry at CCP for choosing the PS3 over the PC in what would seem to be a clearly logical choice given that EVE is a largely PC platform MMO.
So I waited a bit, continued to keep my eyes open for more information, and then Fanfest 2012 landed. This was perhaps the game-changer for me. After seeing how far the game had been developed and how playable it was, I was literally speechless. I wasnGÇÖt fortunate enough to be there for the keynote speech, but after watching the demonstration of Dust 514 AND EVE working in harmony, I was sold. I expect many other felt exactly the same way after watching the orbital bombardment piece, I jumped up and screamed!
This was the moment I had hoped for, and this was the moment I decided that I would sell my 360, and buy a PS3. Let me be clear, Dust 514 is the ONLY reason I bought a PS3, there are no other games at the moment that I intend on buying for it. A couple of months after Fanfest 2012 had concluded, the Mercenary Pack was introduced which allowed gamers to gain instant access to the beta as well as obtain some cool gifts. This was the point I entered the Dust 514 beta and gained first-hand experience with the game.
I had no problems getting registered, downloading or installing the beta, everything went quite smoothly and was able to join a match within minutes. Sadly the NDA prohibits me from talking about my experiences any further at this point, but I can say that you will not be disappointed.
Dust 514 is shaping to be everything I had expected, and I hope that for anyone undecided about getting involved in it, this thread helps you make your decision.
One thing to keep in mind. It is a beta, and it is still in development.
I will do my best to answer any questions you guys might have.

Unfortunately we cannot say for certain as it would be in breach of the NDA.

You are a terrible person for teasing this.
Perhaps you can answer this one:
Call of Duty is lone-wolf style, but team play can help. Battlefield relies on team aspects, but not everyone's on the same page. MAG actually gives rewards for team-oriented actions, but it's not mandatory.
Where does Dust fall on this scale? Do people actually coordinate and work together? Occasionally plays sober |

Well I think this falls entirely down to the person who is playing and what their play style is. I would say that Dust creates the opportunities for all types of these play styles to facilitate as many play styles as possible.

There are several mechanics that reward team work.
Unfortunately I cant elaborate on what those are. Got to get them beta keys to see what they are!
I will say if you like customizing things and "pimping" things out you will love dust.
Some one on the dust forums complained about having to take the time to set drop suit and vehicle fittings. My only response was:
"Oh come on! Thats half the fun!"
Im having a lot of fun with the Beta and I see this build really stress's the importance of Vehicle use/supression/support, and turrets.
Again this has become a sticking point with some testers but my response, is learn to counter and they will be much easier to deal with. They are not pulling vehicles any time soon. Noir. and Noir Academy are recruiting apply at www.noirmercs.comI Noir Academy: 60 days old must be able to fly at least one tech II frigate. I Noir. Does it have auto-leveling for the Y Axis (look up and down), or to look UP and have to move the stick twice, once to look UP and then another to get back to central position.
Anyone?
Does it have an option to turn this on?

I'm going back nearly 20 years here, but GoldenEye on the N64 had it, as did Turok.
It's not just a case of 'getting used to it' it's more about what the point of an look/aim stick actually is.
Just to be clear, one stick moves the character in forwards/backwards/L-R strafe and another stick aims & looks - correct? If so, I do not want to have to re-center the vertical position of the stick; I want to option of having it re-center automatically when I let go of the stick.
This, to me, is the half-way house between a M&KB approach to gaming on a console - hence I would need to move my furniture around, because between my plasma and the leather couch, there is nothing to rest a mouse and keyboard on...so I would need to move all my furniture around to accomodate the sitting position and resting position to fully accomodate the necessity of playing game which does not allow for vertical re-centering based on the position of stick, as opposed to the position the character was last pointed at.
I'll put it another way; if I keep pushing the stick 'up', there is a angular limit of 90 degrees is there not? and therefore if someone is 45 degrees off the vertical axis, I have to adjust to the stick to 'get it' at 45 degrees by pushing forwards and backwards until I get the 45 degree point; correct?
I want the option of 'holding' the stick in the correct position of 45 degrees, 'boom', get the shot, let go of the stick, and move onto the nest target - not fluff about with moving the stick up and down until it is back at a central position.
Probably a stoopid question to ask on these forums (sometimes) but...
I am making any sense to anyone?
This, to me, is (or should) be a very basic option for FPS on a stick controlled game - especially one based on open terrain, where foes could potentially be anywhere on the vertical axis, especially air vehicles that I may wish to take down flying overhead at speed...
Comments, anyone?

If I use KB/M I take small tables the same height as my chair's arm rests; so the tables now become the arm rests; then I put mouse on one and FPS keypad on the other; now I can recline with arms at a rested position on the controls.

I have no intention of byuing a PS3... but I still hope DUST succeeds... simply because it could be a good thing for the future of EVE (and gaming in general).
Problem is, I'm highly sceptical that a console game, especially one that is coming out right at the end of the current console generation, will be as successful and long running as EVE... concole gamers are a totally different bunch. |

Well said and I totally agree! Limiting the game to 1 console is suicide I am afraid. Release for PC and appease the people who made it possible for you folks at ccp to even attempt to make Dust...the players. |

That was the one aspect of GoldenEye I didn't like.
I do play a few FPS games on the 360, so I would say the current set up is much better. I feel like you've contradiced yourself a little here. Surely in a game where sh*it comes at you from all angles you want the freedom to pan around where you want without it automatically returning to centre. It also adds an extra skill element to it.

**This is a game breaker?
If you need the game to help you along, it may be best to not play a game above your capability. Everyone else has the same controller scheme, and adding a mechanic such as that would change the dynamics, or what some people call "strategies" of the game-play.
For one player who uses the normal scheme where there is no auto-center, it takes normal human reaction time to get to center, but for auto-center guy, it's faster. You can argue that the speed to center can be adjusted, but why? Developers use this little thing called "control" it allows for a level playing field.
Plus, on August 21st you can use a USB keyboard and mouse to play the game, give that a shot. |
