What that article only mentions in passing is that enrollment in that school district is down over 40% over the last ten years, and more than 70% over the last fifty years, because Kansas City has been a ****hole for a long, long time now and nobody wants to live there. Closing the schools makes sense, they're less than half full anyway.

I am hooked on learning, to the point where this obsession means I consume devour and live of knowledge and not that biased crap you see on media related stuff or opinions without any facts.
I never bothered attending school, college or even uni and would get flamed ALOT for not attending but I would show up for every exam and hand in all my stuff on time, in UK theres like some attendance scoring and mine has ALWAYS been **** fortunately my grades were always flawless so I managed to get away with not attending majority of my classes.
I am not sure how it works in other countries but in UK the schools are a joke, college was even worse and uni I must admit was ok but still screwed up, the way I saw stuff 5 hours of learning something at home was equivalent of a month of school / college / uni, sadly certain things had to be taught in a controlled environment (take biology / chemistry for example) but it even got to a point where I just gave up on being bored and learning the same crap.
No this isnt me bragging I am just simply saying a person ANY person can easily educate themselves with proper resources, I did spend alot but I just never worked well with teachers playing the "we bare a title therefore we are in charge by default and theres nothing you can do about that" but then what am I saying these primitive rules have been around for centuries ;) and I doubt they will change anytime soon.
Besides, aspirations were ****ed too almost everyone wanted to study because "they had a trauma in their life and wanted to work towards something that was closely linked to the trauma", "following the family role, with or without choice" or my personal favourite "I am going to revise all of this yet not understand it, pass it get lots of money".
In short the way education works is a complete disaster, so I wonder how and why there are soo many bums in UK compared to lets say Sweden where people value knowledge and information.
Oh and no im not a bum or poor or unemployed but I am my own boss, I dont bare a title and no money isnt and will never be my priority, ironically enough those that donÆt base their life on money freely get in huge doses FIRST!! Bring back Derek Chu

I do agree that anyone can educate themselves with the proper rescourse(sp?). But one thing the school really should be for is not just purely teaching facts, but allowing students to reflect and discuss those facts. Since there's two parts of learning, getting the facts, and understanding them from your own and classmates points of views. This is something that home schooling cannot do.
Now i know this is an ideal situation and that it is far from the truth. I live in sweden myself and we got primary school and upper secondary school. Primary school goes from the ages 6/7-15, grade 1-9 roughly translated. Here you got basic subjects like english, swedish, math, and that kind of stuff. After that you have upper secondary school, this one is abit harder to explain but i'll do my best.
Upper secondary school lasts for 3 years and is fully voluntary, here you get to choose what kind of subjects you'd like to study, like a more specialized education. A few of theese can be electronics, industry and more theoretical studies. This branches into two different education types. practical which aims to prepare you for working Theoretical which is more like preparing for higher studies.
And then we got university studies.
The downside of many schools today is that they are forced into a parental role teaching kids how to behave, rather than a educational institution. This is due to kids not being able to focus or behave during classes. So teachers have to learn theese kids manners which is not the purpose of education.
Another issue with many educational systems as i mentione before, is that they aim to pack students full of knowledge, but they don't give them time to think about the knowledge they actually go. Instead they pack more and more. This in turn put alot of stress on students and take away their will to learn, due to alot of homeworks etc. Kids need out of school activities to actually cope with studies. Also if you just aim to fill a student with knowledge, it's social skills will not be improved either. Since it has to spend alot of time at home just to do homeworks.

Two things...
1) The kids will still have to go to school. Some will just have to travel farther to get there.
2) This is not happening in Kansas. This is happening in Kansas City, in the state of Missouri.

Quote: # The Montgomery, Ala., Public School Board voted last week to lay off more than 600 employees, including 415 teachers, in what it said was just the first phase of staff reductions. # In the northwest suburbs of Chicago, the Illinois 46th District school board this week approved a proposal to lay off more than 1,000 employees ù about 25 percent of the districtÆs staff ù to help make up a projected deficit of $44 million. More than 700 teachers would lose their jobs, including all first-, second- and third-year instructors.

Edited by: Obsidian Hawk on 19/03/2010 16:30:05 Just to clear up some things.
The kansas city school district is not in kansas, it is in missouri.
The kansas city school district has already lost accredidation twice.
Finally when ever someone in the news talks about Kansas City, they are always reffering to kansas city, missouri, not kansas city, kansas.
So just to clear that up.
PS the kansas, city ks school districts are Shawnee mission Blue Valley Olathe Levanworth De Soto
Edit : I should point out that the kc sd is also one with the highest crime, drop out rates in the area. it really is a problematic inner city school district.
