That confused me when I was new as well.
A Proteus is a Strategic or Modular Cruiser. The Subsystems make up the ships stats, there are 4 for offense, 4 for defense, 4 for engines, 4 for fitting / capacitor and 4 for support and EWAR and other stats. You can fit one of each of the 4 on the ship and that decides the number of slots, where the slots are, its fitting, HP, Bonuses, Drone Bay and so on.
You make the ship basically. Once you have the Subsystems attached you can then fit it like any other ship with modules and rigs. |

If you're having cap problems I feel bad for you son, got 99 problems but managing cap ain't one. Salvagers for getting dat phat money from dead T2/T3 ships. |

look up strategic cruisers (T3s) if you want a rundown of how they work. |

Swappable in stations (so not at a POS or using capital fitting services). This makes them incredibly useful for things like exploration where having one ship play many roles (and play them well at that) is immensely powerful. |
