So, I'm fairly new to EVE, and I've spent a chunk of my training time on industrial and science skills, because I like making stuff and I want to do research stuff. And I run missions, because I find that fun and it's a way to learn the very, very basics of flying my ships while making some isk.
The thing is, I fly Gallente ships and shield-tank them, and I know that's wrong, really I do, but I can't seem to make armour-tanking survivable.
Can someone explain to me how I do it? I've got armour reinforcements against the damage types the rats I'm killing throw at me, I've got my armour repairer, and I've even got the skills and modules to build it so my cap can handle the strain. (Those modules that trade shield boost for cap recharge seem pretty awesome.)
But when I try to armour-tank actual damage, I can't seem to stay out of hull. I can't get the regen/time going, where with a shield booster (even one that's been reduced in favour of my cap recharge) I rarely take armour damage - and if I do, I've usually got cap enough that for a while I can sustain shield boosting *and* armour repair until I've cut down some attackers. (Or else I have time to warp out before my hull takes a serious hit.)
Advice requested, because I know I'm wrong but my wrongness is the only way I can make things work.

I assume this is for pve. I'm also assuming when you shield tank, you have more damage mods/tracking enhancers. Therefore, you are killing stuff faster, before it can do as much damage to you. It's the gank tank, and generally the most efficient way to run missions.

Lets start off by you giving both your shield as armor fit, kinda difficult to reply otherwise :)

Armour tanks tend to = dual reps, resist modules, CCC rigs and lots of cap rechargers.
TBH the Domi has a lot of mid slots and you can go either way with it for PVE.
The only downer is you're losing out on drone upgrade modules.

I'm by no means any sort of an armor tanking expert.
If you step into an armor tanking ship after being in passive shield tank or cap stable active shield tank, you will find armor tanking a completely different and strange world.
It helps to have piloted cap unstable ships like a Raven with a X-L shield booster. You get used to pulsing the shield booster to maintain your shield buffer, as you can't run it constantly. Note that I lost my first Raven about 1 day after moving up from a Drake; haven't lost one since though.
I personally find that armor tanks are superior at big buffer tanking, and tend to be horrible at tanking sustained damage over long periods. Armor plates add a HUGE amount of EHP compared to shield extenders, but armor reppers are slow and inefficient compared to shield boosters.
The key to both shield tanking something like a Raven or an armor tank seems to be to simply have a big enough buffer, and enough DPS, to finish off your targets before you run out of cap or shield/armor.
The most common mistake with a Raven is to over-tank it. I'm betting the same is true of most beginner's armor tanking fits.

Yes, chatgris is right. The best setups for pve and especially missions are the ones that make the rats die fast. With a shield tank you have enough room for 3 magnetic field stabs and some tracking enhancers. Your guns add nice dps to your drones, the gank rail domi is one of the best damagedealers on medium range.

Those moduals that trade cap recharge for shield boost are low slot moduals and are very much not awsome for an active armour tank.
Use the mid slot rechargers and 3 cap recharge rigs.

Thank you all, with apologies for the sub-optimal forum choice.
It all makes a lot more sense now and my Domi's armour no longer feels like it's made of cardboard and sticky tape. I'm falling in love again for the first time since I took my first Vexor out for a spin. It looks like a sackful of knuckles but it hits like one too and it's mine, all mine.
