Edited by: Plato Forko on 15/03/2010 23:20:34 hey, first post, i'm not exactly a noob to the game but i'm still pretty new and cash strapped. been training up skills for some mining as of late and currently use a cormorant with T2 lasers. i was going to get a retriever but then i realized industrial ships are far cheaper and can carry just over twice what the retreiver can.
for the time being i'm just looking to mine in high-sec and a few ninja runs into low-sec, and was wondering if it makes good sense to anchor a secure can and load it up from the cormorant then pick up the haul with a badger mkII instead of paying twice the cost for a retriever and running back to station every time i hit 2000 m3?

It's all about mining bonuses - Don't mine in a cormorant it may have tons of turret slots for lasers, but a Bantam will usually outmine it because it gets bonuses to mining rate, even better is the Osprey which needs the Caldari cruiser skill and also gets great bonuses to mining. Train up drones skill and use mining drones for even better yields. Once you've got caldari cruiser to 3 then by all means train up for a mining barge, which can fill that can faster still, although your main problem will start to be that those GSCs seem pretty small when you're mining with strip miners.

Edited by: ingenting on 16/03/2010 02:24:25 Industrial: (max) 2x Miner II = apox 150m3 every 1 minute
Retriever: uses TWO STRIP MINERS, which have NINE HOUNDRED m3 every 3 minutes (per laser) PLUS DRONES
do the math

That's because you're mining. Mining is one of the lowest-paying activities in EVE.

You're actually better off ratting in hi-sec (0.5 - 0.6 systems are the most profitable) and doing whatever level missions you qualify for and selling the loot on sell orders.
You'll get lucky once in awhile a get a "named" module worth some decent Isk.
Don't stop training your main or an alt to mine, as occasionally you'll need ore for storyline missions and as always, it is a source of income when you get tired of running missions.

thanks for the great advice, i ended up blowing most of my isk outfitting a caracal to rat in low-sec so i guess i'm gonna be doing a bit of ratting and maybe mine to a GSC now that i have enough skill and isk to use a badger mkII. still gonna finish training for the retriever but i figured i'd be better off first with a badger since i've already got a buttload of loot i want to pick up all over the place and haul to jita. will definitely return to hi-sec mining once i've trained up for strip miners, got a few BPOs that need the minerals
