We've all tried it, getting our friends to play EVE, if only for a little bit. Since EVE is pretty much an acquired taste (ie. not for everyone) this mostly fails. What are the most memorable/wimpy/funny excuses you've heard from people dissing or rejecting eve?
My roommate thought EVE was ridiculously difficult and badly made because he could not figure out how to loot or even target the wrecks in the very first tutorial
Him coming from (where else) wow that says it all.

It'd be more fun" Me: "Oh yeah, cause you know.... doing 360s in the TITANIC is a ball" Him: "Then they should make them turn faster" Me: "Again... KM long ships... not gonna happen." Him: "Call me when they have manual control. I wonder if my guild's raiding tonight. Should pull out the healing priest" Me: *facepalm* "Can't you play a grown up game for once?" Him: "WoW is pretty hard." Me: "You need a girlfriend.... now..." ----------------------------------------

Several months ago:
Friend: I'm just logging, I may be some time.
Me: ok
Friend: Never logged in EVE again
The issue was the UI, he hated it, especially after I tried to talk him through some of it just to use the ingame voice. He simply felt it was not worth the bother and assumed the rest of the game would be borked despite me saying how good it was.

This. Along with the less self aware ¦it¦s just excel!!!¦ comments.
Another buddy of mine did the trial, liked his ¦fleet of many ships¦ (all t1 frigates for his race) but still never came back.
The last one i've tried to entice into internet spaceships was put off by the fact that he would lose all of his gear when he died. Also a wow-player.

Look on the bright side, we less have morons in game than WoW :) Took me 3 attempts to get into the game and apparently I'm 'extremely intelligent'... I've tried to get friends involved, all former WoW players but they don't want to get sucked into an MMO again; can't blame them really. Boom? |

My friend compared eve to wow and said wow was much more his game because in wow they had a course/journey set for them. Whilst in eve you just sat there, watched a spaceship and span in circles. 18:19:51 Combat Corpus Prophet misses you completely. |

One Guy left as pvp made him feel physically ill, another one as he couldn't just buy a battle ship, he has to "train" for it Ans was looking are a month of learning skills and another left as he too wanted twitch controls like descent

of course we are all intelligent we all have an IQ of 147 on and a 9 inch *****, we are from the internet god dammit!
and I tried to get a friend in a while back, but he is more of a casual gamer, and well eve has a bit of a slow start and that doesn't help at all. Don't really think he would stick around in any mmo though.
trying to get another friend into eve, he claimed he didn't want to start because it would consume his life or something a while back. Likely get started this weekend, will see where that goes

The problem is he is actually right. We are in Space so the only problem we face when turning ships is acceleration effects on the people inside (which seems pretty much covered otherwise warp would kill us^^) Second is Inertia. You would only need to grow thrusters proportionally to the ship (as it is done with main engines) and not keep those frigate sized ones.
What we are playing atm is Silent Hunter Online, because our ships seem to have to push away more and more "space" as they grow larger

You know that your Mom's opinion doesn't really count, right?
I've had a couple of friends bail on Eve and say "I'll see you when this DUST thing happens." I guess Eve lacks twitch (and they lack attention span.)

Me: Yo' man when are you going to log in? Friend: I quit. Me: What? When? Why? And why didn't you tell me? Friend: About two weeks ago, because I just can't figure out how to play it, and I knew you'd laugh. Me: Two weeks.... You can't figure out the game.... Yeah, your right, I am laughing at you. Friend: Well F... You too! Me: *still laughing here*

Don't think your left hand counts as a GF, though. :P
Anyway I tried to get my friend back (who used to be a goon), so he sad it was boring and nothing to do etc. After a little bit of probing I found out that they had pretty much spoon fed him everything from ISK to frigates and towed him to 0.0 from a get go and I think we all know how much a week old newbie can do in a null sec if we don't count mining in frigate or dying in PvP.

Got to love xkcd :)
Part two of this thread is learning how to better entice our friends to play the game. We have to tell them that:
1) 'Epic' equipment isn't nearly as important as in wow or other games. So it's not very painful to lose things when you die
2) You don't lose EVERYTHING. Just what you are flying. If that's everything you have, you are doing it wrong.
3) Yes it's a hard game, only for people with balls of steel and the tenacity of a bull. Not really true but they will want to 'measure up' :)

The response from the last friend I introduced to EVE;
If I wanted to play a game where I could lose everything in a split second I'd go gambling at a dog track.

I always get people looking at EvE and dismissing it because:
- Graphics seem 2005
- Sounds seem 2001 (I am being generous here)
- User interface is 1990 (I am being more generous here) - Auditing & consulting

Eve players aren't clever, infact they are stupid enough to adapt themselves to the GUI. Ironically that's what makes them think they're clever.
