since i started mission run in eve i did mission against guristas or serpentis.
firstly in a cruise raven "upgraded" to a drone megatank dominix.
i allways wanted to use an AC boat but it always ended badly in all my tests.
now with projectile adjustment i was wondering if it could be viable in pve: i'm thinking to do mission for republic security services which usually gives me mission against close range angels npcs.
any of you does? is it a good option?
i know best answer is test it yourself but i should work some time on my standing so no way testing it soon. and i actually fear it would end in a complete waste of time (due to very low social skills)
tnx in advance -------- ...qui repentius currunt.... don't need to tank =) |

Edited by: Thirzarr on 17/03/2010 17:26:34 Honestly.
If it comes to level 4 missions the AC boats are totally on par with the caldari missile-spammers.
The maelstrom is awesome bang-for-the-buck and the vargur is when flown properly better than probably 9/10 golems out there.
[Maelstrom, AC affordable] Tracking Enhancer II Damage Control II Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer Republic Fleet Gyrostabilizer

Large Projectile Metastasis Adjuster I Large Projectile Ambit Extension I Large Projectile Burst Aerator I
Hammerhead II x5
this Mael puts out 989 dps at optimal. so at 30km depending on skills (just use more ambits if you feel like it) you still dish out 750-800 (guessed, not calculated). The tank isnt "AE Bonus Room perma-tank" and obviously you dont take an EM hardener to Guristas Missions... but it will chew up pretty much anything you throw at it. Just watch your triggers.
If you go this way - the vargur is essentially the same just more range and less ammo usage and actually not as easy to fit. But still among the mission gods.

I don't really think your skill decision should have anything to do with lvl4's, with that said, you can't really say a ship with the same dps, less tank and 1/5'th of the range is "on par" with a standard cnr.
Again, in everything that isn't related to lvl4's minnie wins out so stick to your guns (pun intended).

That Mael fit is certainly nowhere near 'on par' with a Raven.
However, the Mach and Vargur are now fantastic lvl 4 boats with their ridiculous falloff, speed, tank, and interchangeable damage.
For lvl 1-3 / sub-BS, I think missiles or drones are still far more viable for missions.

Its on par b/c it has same DPS in the range that matters, has enough tank (permatank/overtank is for pussies) and costs 1/5th of a CNR.
If you're going to compare faction boats when very similarly fit Machariel is better than CNR. 1200DPS at optimal (RF ammo), 65km falloff, more than enough for any mission out there, with a cost slightly higher than CNR.

I've decidede myself to get a "real" AC mission boat myself also. I'm not that rich but I finally have the cash to burn on either Machariel or Vargur. Problem is that both ships seem very similar in the end and it's hard to decide which one would be better for lvl 4 missions.
Would there be any good suggestions here about which to get and why?

The machariel is a multi faction battleship so that comparison isn't fair but yea perhaps cnr wasn't either. The standard lvl4 "caldari missile spewing ship" is a raven/cnr which I guess is why I thought of it.
In any case, carry on. a couple of good minnie missions ships suggestion so far.
edit: and 65km is still an handicap that takes it closer to torps (62km or so).

Meh, it takes whooping 10 days to train BS4 from scratch. With Barrage your falloff is somewhere in 90km range. IIRC Mach with Barrage does something like 900DPS with Barrage so at 60km you can expect 600-700 which is comparable/better than a Jav spewing CNR, especially with 4 sentries.
Mach, to me, is a turret CNR: Versatile boat that puts out loads of variable damage at ranges that matter. Nightmare is arguably better at shooting EM but we don't always have that luxury. That, and tracking sucks.

Varg is somewhat slower ( which isn't really that important for missions ), but you can loot as you go. Also does a little less DPS but uses less ammo. Other than that I can't say, I own a Mach and it's applied DPS is pretty ludicrous; huge falloff *and* the mobility to position yourself quickly. Doesn't have much of a tank so you have to be a little cautious, and of course you can't really loot with it, but the last mission I stopped to loot I came away with 174m3, and I'm wondering if they're quietly adjusting drops. Current personal Angel Blockade time is 17 mins, seem to have hit a wall there but that will give you some idea of performance, and I have no racial BS5 although my gunnery has very little room for improvement.
TLDR; Varg - loot, Mach - speed.
