So, I put a Sell Order up for an item around 13.5m isk.... and I logged on last evening to find that I infact received 135m isk for the item. I also got an Evemail requesting the funds returned.
Two questions -
How did I get 120m extra for the item??? Should I return it? I didn't purposefully scam him, and I didn't move a decimal and try to cheat... I just put a simple sell order up in Jita.

How would that work? I thought when you went to buy an item with a Sell Order up, it told you how much the cost was, and all you had to do was click ok?
If he had the wrong order up when buying, wouldn't it have purchased it from the other guy for 135m?

What the hell? You keep it all so the seller will be more careful next time! It's for his own good, otherwise he'll probably do it again with much more money at some point - and the chances of you getting it again are slim.

Uh? What happened is that your generous donator wanted to create a new buyorder and set the price to high. It will then automatically buy all orders that are below that price until the order is fulfilled.

There's a broker system, you say how much you're willing to pay, it gets you the cheapest in that location and gives the money to the seller. |

no he buys from the lowest priced order but pays the full price he set, this makes RMT much harder and means that you should be very careful when buying from the market drunk

no, because the market automatically buys the lowest priced item no matter what you agree to pay for it.

Not really. But it requires you to have a brain and do it with station-bound orders in some deadend station where there are no other orders for that particular item.
Basically the same you do when you want to "tweak" the market average a little bit...

13.5 x 100 = 1350
It's a shame you didn't get that much though!
What happened is that even when you right click and select "Buy", the market system still creates a buy order to equal what you requested. Thus if you make this buy order for 135 million, you will have the highest buy order, which is automatically matched to the lowest sell order.
Enjoy your 135m.

No. A purchase request charges you for you you click on, but takes them item and gives the money to the lowest cost one.
So if you put something up for 10mil, and I put two of something up for 1, No matter which one a buyer selects, I will get the money and my order will drop from two items to one item, but if he selects yours, I get 10mil whereas If he selects mine I get 1 mil.
I personally would say no, point out this system, and tell him it sucks to be him.

I sold a 10mn MicroWarpdrive II once for 90 mil. I'm telling you, the guy was totally in a hurry or he really needed that MWD.
Also, he never mailed me about it or anything.
On a semi-related note, I remember when I bought off the market a Succubus for like, 9.2 mil ;D That was a looong time ago but oh wow were those the days ;)

Dear Neoenderli,
I'm too lazy to think of an explanation even if it's probably obvious, but you should definitely keep the money. Keep the money. Keep the money. Whoever he is, if he threatens you, tell him you're a bastard with at least 135m and thus as dangerous as a wild tiger.

That happened to me once as well.
Some yahoo paid me 72,000 ISK a unit for Scourge Missiles.
He bought 10,000 units.
About 5 minutes later I get a convo request from him asking for the money back. I ignored him and bought an Orca with the profit.
That was a good day. --Vel

I listed something worth 390M for 240M once. I didn't even bother trying to get a refund. Instead I just went and scammed someone out of 170M, then another guy out of 125M, then another guy out of 110M. That made me feel better.

I see what the misunderstanding here is. The problem isn't that he paid too much, so don't return the money. The problem is, that he feels he didn't get a product worthy of that amount of money. What you should do, is answer him politely and make the item worthy of the price he paid. Make him happy with the purchase and try to offer other products of similar high quality at the same reasonable price. This way you both will be satisfied with the deal and the real problem is solved.
Here are few ideas you might want to try. For example you could tell about the long and interesting history of the item or tell how it is the top of the line, special edition model, that is sure to make the buyer popular with the ladies and make other pilots jealous of the high quality of his equipment. Another angle would be to emphasize to him, that good performance items, like he purchased, don't actually cost money, they make money. What he paid was just an initial investment, that he can easily earn back by the proper use of the product in question.
Hope this helps with your "problem". |

I once put a buy order up for a Phoenix for what was meant to be 2 bil but I was in a rush and put 2 mil instead. I forget about it and a few months later im looking through my assets and to my surprise I have a Phoenix sitting there. Didn't use it but did end up selling it for 1.8 bil and getting a Golem.

Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't dabbled in the "dark" side of Eve yet... and I guess here's my chance.
Good information about buy/sell orders.. I'm usually very careful about digits and how much I buy/sell for.
Thanks again. |

Be a good guy; tell him you'll return the ISK he got overcharged.
But first you need him to send you enough to cover the transaction fee. Should be about 10M. |

Look where the item was sold, then look for other sales of that item at the same station. Chances are there's someone trying to sell at that inflated price. If so, the buyer bought from that order, but because of the way the market works, the transaction went to you because you had the lowest sell order in station at that time. |

As a crook, a liar and a thief I can tell you: What you did isn't even questionable. Your reputation is as unscathed as before, the only thing you'd achieve by paying that dude his money "back" is that people would think you're stoopid. :P |
