Barges are smaller than battleships, meaning it is easier to position them near a can without getting in the way of a hauler when group mining.
The three minute cycle requires less attention than the one minute cycles of standard lasers, making it eaiser to do other things (like post on these forums) while mining in secure space.

Between having to transfer ore from the ship to a jetty every minute or every second minute I prefer doing it every third minute, yes. The fact I'll be able to fill that jetty much faster doesn't hurt either...

I like being able to shift ore every three minutes while doing other things. This is how I get most of the isk that I use when I'm devoting my full attention to the game. Empire mining might not be glamorous, but it's an easy, steady income that adds up over time.
