I am a caldari pilot with almost 8mil SP speced towards caldari missioning. However, I like to pvp and caldari ships arn't GREAT at it. However, I was thinking about cross training to gallente ships. Now my reasoning for this is because Gallente and Caldari share some skills that are usefull in both races. I.E. hybrid turrets and drones. I just want a second opinion as to whether I should cross train so I am solo pvp capable or just stick with caldari. Any comments are appreciated. thanks

If you want to crosstrain do it proper. Train Minmatar or Amarr.

I am in the very same situation atm, altough i have not trained much towards pve, been focusing on falcon/covert ops.. Around 9m sp now, i to was thinking about cross training Gallente for something more "soloable" and since i already have the gunnery (hybrids) i thought this would be the easiest route?

If you want to solo, go minmatar. Or caldari. _______________________ We come for our people! |

Why minmatar and amarr? I know a lot of very capable gallente pilots. I also know a lot of very capable amarr and minmatar pilots as well. However, I know only 1 capable pvp caldari pilot. some very popular ships in pvp are vexor and brutix. just to name a few. the skills involved with training gallente ships would be hybrid turrets which would help if i decided to jump in a moa or ferox. what are some of the advantages that ammar and minmitar have over gallente? ive never flown any other race other than caldari so I dont really know. thanks

Edited by: surfskater2003 on 26/03/2010 16:49:14 so, I have been looking into it. I still haven't made up my mind yet. A lot of the forums say Gallente is not doing so hot right now. I looked a little into minmatar and my missile skills would not go to waste on a minmatar pvp ship. and with the cyclone, my shield skills wont go to waste either. not to mention, minmatar is fast. Anyone have any objections? And please provide reason if you say i'm heading the wrong direction.

People are reluctant to address this topic because all races have some ships that are the best in their class and of course, what is good today could be nerfed tomorrow and of course you do actually need to know how to fit and play each individual ship before you can truely shine in it.
Minmater are currently flavour of the moment particular for small gang and solo pvp due to their speed advantages (which is further enhanced with nano fits) and projectile weapons which tend to be the most versatile / best mix of range/damage/cap use (lack of).
Amarr are the best Armor tankers in the game and this tends to be good for larger ship and fleet ops.
Gallente and Caldari tend to be the poor mans choice, but both can shine if you play to the right strengths. For Gallente that means small gang Drone boats and for Caldari that means ECM and logistics for larger gang/fleet support. But there are sure to be supporters of particular ships that don't comply to these broad statements.
There are exceptions to all of the above and a good player will find his own niche/playstyle in a particular ship/fitting combination. There is no such thing as a fair fight in this game and every loss is as much the result of a bad call on the part of the losing player as it is the skills and superiority of his opponent.
For example the Dramiel (Pirate faction frigate) is considered the best T1 frigate in the game at the moment on account of it's speed and other attributes and which is regularly used by solo PvPer to take down even BCs (PvE fit) out ratting, I know cause I lost a Hurricane to one. They were such a problem in our area of 0.0 that my old CEO brought a BPC for one (65M isk), built it, undocked it to give our griefers a taste of their own medicene and was one shotted 2 minutes later by a Slepnir.

Pretty much what Major Trant said.
Each race has something to offer. Each t1 ship is versatile enough to allow many fitting styles. Most t2 ships can be "broken" into something different. t3 is the epitome of versatility.
Just pick a ship, try fitting it, and go out and die. See what went wrong, fix it, and go try again. Repeat till you either like the ship, or prove you will never like it. Then try another ship. _______________________ We come for our people! |

Hybrids suck, and all races use drones so those are not good reasons. Minnie all the way! They are fun to fly. Caldari can be fun to fly with ECM, but it means that your are the primary which can be bad when you fly falcons. :)
