Sure, you can make arguments for the addition of Planetary Interaction (farmville in space?) and Eve Gate (spacebook?), but I think that there is something a little more insidious going on here. I think CCP wants to turn Eve into a sort of Tamagochi-esque activity in order to increase customer 'focus time' and up the overall number of logged hours by players.
Yes, I agree that the goal of the company should be to make money and be profitable and expand and all that, but aren't there better ways to do it than to rip off farmville and stick it in space?
Recently there was an article in the New York Times discussing Nintendo trying to make the leap from mere video game to 'lifestyle product' by designing a USB/wireless keyfob that would allow users to continue to interact with their Pokemon game while away from it.
This is essentially what CCP is trying to do/emulate. CCP is designing more avenues of attention to herd player attention back towards the game. They quite literally are trying to build an environment where a player's life can be Eve-centric. 23/7-365.
Some of you may recall the insanity of the Tamagotchi fad that happened a while ago. People literally went crazy because of these things. Always beeping for attention and making real life demands of their 'owners'. CCP is positioning Eve to be one step closer to a similar player-game relationship.
To me, CCP seems to be peddling PI as a stepping stone to Dust514, but as Eve players, do we really care/want our Eve game to be contaminated with an FPS? Is that why we play Eve? To interact with console players? Why not just launch a separate IP? That way if (when) it gets boring for the console guys it won't impact Eve. Do we really want/need farmville in space when we could have similar effort devoted to oh, say, mining redesign, exploration, industry, new ships, removal of local/intel revisions, FLEET FIGHTS, total restructuring of the mineral streams/axing the drone regions/loot drops, re-purposing L4 missions... the list goes on.
How many people here currently play farmville on FaceBook? How many would play a CCP developed 'Spaceville' on FaceBook? How many currently don't use FaceBook but are planning on participating in Eve Gate? How many use FaceBook and see Eve Gate as a complete parallel?
I'm not saying that these new additions will be completely bad, but I'm just putting it out there: why add in these features that are clear copies of outside concepts from other internet formats that really have little to do with Internet Spaceships and all to do with social media and maintaining a customers (goldfish-like) attention span?
And no, "it's an MMO" isn't a sufficient answer.
Cheers. -

I don't think this post really deserves a meaningful reply. Expansion is good, there are always growing pains and just because you think the mining system needs a revamp doesn't make it so. The system works, it might not be the best but it's functional and to re-design the code for mining and everything you've stated would reduce new content to the game. You criticise EVEGate for being like facebook... People have asked for a method to interact with EVE outside of the game client for sometime... I'm done, I can't reply to all your critics without getting annoyed. It's easy to criticise something and not like it than to adapt to it. EVE doesn't force these new additions on you. So quit whining.

They don't care about hours logged per month, since it's monthly subs. If anything the game actually discourages heavy play due to the real-time skill system, and the ability to buy ISK through real money by PLEX trading.
They probably due want to cash in on the facebook craze and try and make some console money, although they too will probably shelve any console plans like the many other corps that tried. I'm still waiting for my Age of Conan, Champions Online, and Huxley XBOX360 ports.
And hey, Tamagotchi game birth to the Dreamcast VMU, so it wasn't all bad.

Really? It took you this long to realize that?
A company wanting to increase its consumer product usage is what it's all about. Welcome to the world of business. And yes, CCP IS a business.

Logged hours doesn't matter much. Paid accounts and months paid do. The more they can set out to help keep folks frantically pushing the button, the more stuff they can put out to keep folks frantically pushing the button. Which keeps folks paying to push the button. The only advantage to increasing logged hours is that it might help to prevent you from finding other buttons to pay to push.

This is seriously the only thing you were really trying to say during your whole post.
So why did you have to surround it with a bunch of other nonsensical crap that had nothing to do with it?

OP,
Interestingà you make some well informed and valid points. You strike me as an intelligent and obviously media savvy person who enjoys the game play coupled with the community banter..
I find most interesting your references to a product called Tamagochi, you realise its obvious design concept and the juxtaposition it throws both on our disposable society and the user turning his back on common communication methods in the hope of developing and nurturing relationship with a silicon chip.
Sir you rock, now go play wow with the rest of societies secret gamers who prefer to wave a wand n fantasise, IĈm sure they will make you welcome.

I don't know for how long are you been playing, but the "tamagochi feeling" was very stronger when there was not skill queue.
You had to plan in advance your skills and log at a precise time to change it, it was a nightmare, that was "tamagochi".
I actually hope that resource depletion time of a deposit on a planet will be some days and not some hours, so that you could have to check it at most twice a day.

I swear to god, this line gets more inane every time I see it. Are you seriously proposing that you're entitled to feel superior to another person on the basis of which video game you play? Really?
(I'd just like to remind you of the many, many posts you've made excoriating various subsets of the EVE population in the most definite terms. Terms that leave little doubt as to your absolute contempt for them.)
If you genuinely think that playing this video game instead of that video game on this platform or that defines you as superior or inferior, then.... well yeah, I can see why you'd be afraid of CCP's attempt to extend their IP, because you are way too involved in this game. You need to take a step back and re-evaluate yourself. Not EVE, not consoles, you.
To answer your question directly:
Yes, I do want EVE "contaminated" with an FPS. I absolutely want it. And not only that, I want EVE "contaminated" in other ways on many platforms. I want EVE to be "contaminated" with an FPS so that I can experience the EVE-verse as an FPS so I can conquer a planet. I want it "contaminated" with a 3rd person RPG, System-Shock style so I can experience the EVE-verse directly, and see the things described in the Chronicles. I want it "contaminated" with as many ideas as CCP can think of so that the EVE verse becomes as complete and varied a SciFi simulation as it is possible to get.
All I ask is that CCP maintain their principle of player freedom. Limiting us to experiencing New Eden in just one way is not adhering to that principle.
