Early indications are that the attacks were carried out by separatists from the North Caucasus, no doubt in response to security crackdowns by the Russian Government.
Always remember the mantra that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
The world would be a better place is people could talk about their problems rather than just shooting all the time.

Lol. Compared to the Caucasus, the Balkans are a quiet, nice place where everyone loves everyone. Every square centimeter in the Caucasus has at least ten ethnicities having claims on it.

Just a comment to the freedomfighter/terrorist comment:
Killing civilians is not a sign of a freedomfighter. Its an extreme act of cowardice, and does not help your cause at all. Got a problem with the goverement? take the fight to them, not the innocents.
And indeed, our world is not very nice atm, nor had it ever been nice. We are graually making it better, but it goes slowly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indeed.
Please don't think that I am condoning acts like this - I am not. I am merely pointing out that there are always two sides to every disagreement and that it's important to bear the political situation in mind.
Sadly, people do not just wake up one day and decide to carry out acts like this - they always have some grievance against the authorities, either real or perceived.
We in the UK have long understood that you can never resolve these tensions by blowing people up - you need to sit down and talk and negotiate. Nobody likes to be seen to be negotiating with terrorists or indeed to be putting them in government, but that's what it took in Northern Ireland and it seems to be working out pretty well there.

They have a problem with Russia because Russia is not governed according to the principles of Sharia. I think calling anyone fighting for Sharia a freedom fighter to be an oxymoron.

Yeah, "freedom fighters" who choose to punish civilians for things their government may or may not have done. ____________________

Man oh man... they should've stuck to blowing up Americans. At least American retaliation is generally bound by laws. Can't imagine the hell they'll suffer in retaliation from the Russians now. After Beslan happened, I think the Russians killed a whole mess of balkan muslims, just to get revenge.
The reds don't pull their punches like the west does... no Gitmo or trials or three square meals a day for these "freedom fighers" - the Russians will just capture 200-odd people that might look like they know something, and rip pieces off them until one squeals.

Seriously. For the west to declare war, you need a number of perfect conditions: redneck pro-war president, an angry populace willing to support war, and a justice-filled good-guy "cause" to fight toward.
With the Russians, it's more like... oh... they killed 30 of our people. Let's pick some random villages in the Balkans and annihilate them, killing ten times more of their people than they killed ours. Maybe this time they'll learn! And if not... well, they've got a lot of villages left.

And that is the reason I don't feel much sympathy for the russian victims or these bombers. The minimum "some people died in a foreign country" -level sympathy yes, but nothing more. Both sides kill civilians for no good reasons and seem to think it is ok to go on killing more in retaliation. The side who is in the right in that conflict is determined by how far in history you go look and on your view on the legitimacy of Russian rule there. There has been enough indiscriminate violence on both sides, that almost any action against the other is easy to justify to your side at this point. They deserve to have each other.
I would prefer that the russians win this though, if I had to pick a side. Basicly just because they are governed by reason instead of religion. They aren't the good guys, but you can always come to a mutual understanding with them.

I don't see why Americans should be upset about religion fanatics in Russia when we have our own at home.
The only difference I see is that they wear cameo instead of turbans, and it's Jesus Christ on their lips instead of Allah.

Who are you to judge? You can say bombs are a cowards weapon but then again so too probably did the guy with the club when someone brought a spear. People will fight anyway they can if they believe in their cause. This is nothing compared to Grozny.

Killing random people, the true freedom fighters cause?
It amazes me how some of you can twist this into an act of fighting for "freedom" and not the slaughter of civilians for simple vengeance.

You know what's ironic? Somewhere in Africa was a massacre on hundreds of people where children were forced to murder other people (they probably even knew) and no one here has a moral outrage over it. --------

It's amazing how many people spectacularly fail to get the point I was trying to make.
At no point did I claim that these terrorists were freedom fighters - I was making a general point that there are ALWAYS two sides to every story and that whilst we are naturally outraged at what happened, we should also stop and think before we condemn people outright.
Killing civilians isn't the answer, but you would do well you find out who was behind this and what could possibly motivate them to carry out such a wicked act. After all, people don't just wake up one morning and decide to go out and kill civilians without having (what seems to them to be) some grievance against those they want to kill.
I'm not expert on the conflict, but I know the Russians have a history of not playing nice in the North Caucusus and I would be interested to find out more about the background here.

Agreed with Tallaras..I also found Putin's wording in condemning the act slightly inappropriate, on par with Bush's famous 'smoke 'em out of their holes' - but then again he is a politician with totalitarian aspirations ><

Africa is a mess and sadly people come to expect it there, Russia is a modern society so the impact is a lot different, I'm not saying that it lessens the horror by being in Africa, it's peoples perceptions that are different, we can talk all day about it, the reasons why and politics behind it, but Africa is a whole other world quite literally, and at the risk of sounding racist, there is something wrong with the African mentality when it comes to self governance, an over simplification of a common problem of most of Africa south of the Sahara but best I can do without posting a massive wordy essay on African post colonial politics.
"Always remember the mantra that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." I've never subscribed to this point of view tbh, no matter how valid your argument or how right your struggle, wandering into a crowd of civilians with a semtex money belt and exploding it with the intent to kill and maim makes you a mass murderer, albeit one with a political bent.
Whatever the Russian reaction, and I doubt it will be subtle, there will be a lot of sympathy from the rest of us and support, and no small amount of "I wish our government had the balls to do that" however right or wrong it is.
Some people think revenge taints you, but I think the vast majority enjoy it.
One think you can be sure of, the wrong people will suffer most, and in the case of the bombings already suffered.

Condolences indeed to those who have been affected by this.
Terrorism is never going to achieve anything beyond bringing attention to a situation. It's a waste of lives, including the lives of the bombers.

If you started a thread about it, explaining what happened, I'm sure people would post there too. _____________________
