Ok, so you're reading this because some pesky "piwate" in a frigate flipped your 3 cans full of veldspar (Or plagioclase, If you're smart :E). Well, ther are different types of flippers, let's start with labeling them.
1. Aggression Seeker Most common type, this flipper usually comes in a fast frigate with at least a propulsion module. They don't see the value of the stuff they're handling, they'll just gly blindly at you and even bump you out of scooping range. They may even come down to shoot the canister if it makes you go postal and grab your "PVP ship" to deal with him. PROTIP: don't lose your patience.
2. Industrial-On-A-Stick You can usually see these guys coming from a mile away, but if they're smart you won't have the time to react. They usually warp in at a belt with an industrial and bookmark your can only to warp back in scooping range, align and grab your stuff. These guys don't usually seek your reaction, they just want the ore. There's little you can do, other than bumping them or move the ore before they come back.
3. Pricks Funny guys, they come in a battleship or a multi-stabbed battlecruiser and take your ore. It makes little difference to them if the ore is hauled away with their alt or just left there waiting for someone to take the bait. They don't seek a fight, they seek an easy prey to fall for them. Different from Aggro Seekers, as these one are usually followed by a close-by logistic or other battleship/battlecruisers gangs.
4. WHITE WHALE That's me. Really. There are mythological beasts that roam the forest of canisters seeking for Profit. Those rogues are the most dangerous ones, and if they're not handled with care you might end burnt. They look just like aggression seekers in well-tanked frigate, optional speedmods but enough dps to whack-a-barge. Their real power is in their backup. Yes, they do around with an Orca, carrying their deadliest ships ready to open a second orifice in your bottom and kill you dead, taking your ore with them, too.

TL;DR for the blind
1) Don't Mine in cans. Really. 2) Bring friends. Tons of Friends. 3) Use your common sense. PVP is not in the modules. 4) Don't Mine in cans. In case you're stupid. 5) See 4. 6) There is no 6 7) Orca means troubles. People are usually waiting at planets. Scan em.

Simple fix to the whole Neutral Orca, disable access to the hangar when you have an active player aggression timer, not one related to NPC rats.
Will that stop them? Nope, but it will gimp their ability to switch out to a gank BC.
Of course I would love to see CCP design a mod that allows to ships to "link" up in space and transfer ore directly. Just give them a nice little penalty for doing so.

Thank you for accidentally guide, Boomer. I don't know **** about Orca ship bay mechanics though; do you just eject your kill ship and enter it with your pod or can a friendly swap ships with a menu command? Help us to make parrots game related today! |

Using this guide, I have managed do decrease ore loss to visits by canflippers by 73.825% and, as a concequence, upped my effective mining yield by approximately 135.455469%!
Thank you Boomer!

You could try thinking of eve as a "game" and of other pilots, even the mean ones as "players" and have a go at communicating with them. Lots of can flippers don't want your ore, they just want you to come with your Corp for a fight to protect your honour (tm)
speak to one of the local flippers about being there bait. They drop a can fleetwd with you, you mine into that. You get flipped then said pvp pilot can kick their ass. This tactic is tried and tested, lots of people don't even spare the time to check can info.
Said flipper goes about his business flipping all your competition and warps to you if you get your **** nicked. You also inadvertedly stopped said flipper from targetting you ;)

Well.
1. Don't jetcan mine in the belts.
2. If you're going to jetcan mine then do it in mission deadspaces.
3. If you lose a can of ore, that's the cost of doing business.
4. Always always always have a fully trained and equipped suicide ganker toon. Why? Because suicide ganking a can flipper is FUN! Especially if you pod them.
