I can understand locking up the needles, but I don't bother locking up threads unless my sister brings her kitten over for a visit.

Damn it would be awesome if they made a video game where you were a kitten and had to collect different coloured threads.

It's the strangulation hazard I'm concerned with. I also lock the posts up to. Living on large piece of land, fence posts laying around are an impaling and tripping hazard.

Oh yes, threads that aren't used to create content (warm fuzzy socks  ) are quite dangerous, especially to young children.

So many hazards in this world. Some say trolls are mythical creatures. They scare me though.
And threads are dangerous, I badly cut myself as a kid. I picked up a lose thread and some other kid did the same on the other end and pulled. The thread cut into my fingers.

I recently made this using my threads and needles, although I do keep them locked up when I'm not using them.
