Has anybody observed the same as me that if you have a character idling in a POS or station for longer than a few minutes you get a socket closed error much more frequently than when a character is being actively used.
Is this by design to reduce bandwidth by CCP or is it an issue which requires investigation?

Please look around the forums before making a new topic. This issue has been talked to death. It's not CCP's fault; move along.

Please know what you are talking about before you trash somebody. The socket closure issue is not related to the UK broadband meltdown caused by a fire in a London BT substation.

some things that help - open high volume chat channels like Help and ship trade - and run ping plotter - it wont solve the problem but it can help.

I open a command prompt and run "ping -t 87.237.38.200" in the background. Only way I can get a reliable connection.

I had this issue for 6 years. A few months ago it went away completely. What I did? I installed a new modem and router. I d be runnign two accounts simultaneously and just one of them would drop or both. It could be 2 minutes, half an hour or several hours but eventually it did. Also, it happened a lot faster and more frequent if the connections were idling, like you say.
It would seem some modem/router combos do something to **** up the connection so I d start investigating my modem and/or router really close if I were you. Ask your ISP if they have any recommended settings your modem/router should have.
Look up your manufacturer of both modem and router and get into their settings pages with your webbrowser and have a look around. Dont change anything you dont have a clue about tho. Not until you have information about which parameters to change around obviously.
Today, my connection is rock solid. I can leave it running from right after downtime to next downtime without one single disconnect and all I did was change out my modem and router.

Pretty much all my 'socket closed' errors boil down to lost packets in the UK; lost packets, because my ISP, like many ISPs here, are making use of more cost-efficient means of routing that involve using many smaller ISPs within Europe, so every now and then as a link gets congested, users got bumped off onto a different route instead.
It may suck, but it's the price of using a 'shaped' ADSL account, here.
So as suggested, try using a traceroute app such as pingplotter to see if a hop dies. It may be that you're experiencing similar issues or that your home network needs a dusting. Anything's possible, really. ---

Like Trib, I suffered through this issue for a long time. It was so bad it was partly to blame for me taking a long break from the game. But rather than buy a new router, I just updated the router's firmware. (The manual should give you a pretty good idea on how to do this.) Now that I'm back playing, I have had a total of one socket closed problem in the last 2 months.
Maybe it won't solve your issue, but it's something to consider.

Edited by: Ick Ickagami on 06/04/2010 18:22:15 This idea of "lost packets" in the UK is based on a misconception.
The truth is that the packets aren't lost.
They are taken by the government and given to those who have no packets.
The more packets you have, the more the government will take for redistribution, up to 50% according to the new packet tax law.
After all, those with many packets simply don't need them as much as those with few packets, right?
They shouldn't miss them at all. They should simply adjust their online lifestyle to do with fewer packets like the other packet poor people.

Socket closed changes broke the addressbook/mail/wallet/fleet!
or the guess is it is related to said changes.
