Rifter and Rupture.
Thorax/vexor can work as well. Gall don't really have very good frigs. Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |

for solo pvp i like the thrasher and the stabber. If you go thrasher make sure you shield tank it with a medium shield extender 2, use an AB, a scram, and 3 shield rigs.
Gallente have the best however, vexor is very nice if your targets are going to be smaller than you and thorax is for when they are probably going to be your size and up.

why?explanation?
autocannons seem to have bigger and failoff but blasters have more damage. If you have a cruiser sized ship for pvp, would it be better have autocannons because cruisers are slow, or a thorax can be fast enough to use blasters on close range?
how much % of your damage drones do? also do minmatar ships have any drone bays to use drones 2?

oh the multitude of reasons. its so hard to pick one. because of large falloffs ACs can shoot further effectively. eft numbers dont matter if you cant apply it. falloff is a curve, you can get well into it and still do most or nearly all of your optimal dps. since ACs have only a little smaller optimal but much larger falloff, their operation range is much further, and at distances just outside of optimal your better off with them.
ACs have no cap use. ACs have selectable damage type. ACs have VERY LOW ammo volume compared to hybrid charges. ACs have better tracking. ACs use less cpu and grid. ACs gain greater benefits from TEs, making your dps once into falloff a higher percentage. hybrids are pretty terrible for a marginal increase in on paper dps. coupled with their staggering downsides, the only reason to concider using them is for a bonus on a ship, but many like the vexor can ignore the bonus and still come out with great dps.
the state of gallente is poor right now. the reason many people are training for them is just for angel ships. minmatar are fine, amarr seem to be okay, caldari cry still because of falcon changes, but theyre still a huge asset, but gallente need a change. higher dps and id prefer a little more tracking since they are supposed to be close in with blasters. rails could use a little more dps as well, but its not as a pronounced flaw as blasters. Edit: or not

I'd have to second this. I've seen Gallente go from FOTM in the time I've played to their current status as underdog. The funny thing is that, to the best of my knowledge, hybrids haven't changed one iota in that time.
Instead it's been death by papercuts with nerfs to speed and web effectiveness, both things Blaster ships need to hop on their target and hold them there while they melt them into slag. The introduction of drone bandwidth screwed up the relative power of some mid-sized drone boats. Gallente lost out at the introduction of tier 3 BSs, while Amarr and Minmatar got ships that edged uncomfortably close to the Mega's DPS while greatly out-ranging it.
I remember when being within web range of a Megathron was a death sentence.
Anyway, whichever route you choose, hybrids are looking like the next stop for balancing. ACs are fantastic now, and Artillery has its uses, but fly what you like. I played the underdog race for years and loved it before Dominion came along.
It'll probably be nice to have worked on your hybrid skills by the time they get the attention they deserve.

I think the single biggest nerf to hybirds was the HP boosts.

Because ACs mean Rifter and blasters kinda suck anyway.

If we're going ahead and looking at cruisers, the Vexor is a solid choice. Drones can indeed be nasty.
And yes, many matar cruisers can also field drones. Just not evil drones of smiting like the Vexor (and Arbitrator, but that's another discussion) can.

Autocannons are basically capless blasters now with selectable damage types and much better falloff. What little damage they lose in comparison is usually made up for by the fact that they can apply their damage sooner in most scenarios.
Minmatar ships are also faster, people flew them for this fact alone back when autocannons weren't FOTM.
Anyhow, I intend to rock out in my Ferox and Thorax soon enough despite being able to fit t2 autos. Why? Because blasters are cool and then I'll have a good excuse for when I get beaten badly ;)

Which means that with AC and minmatar ships you have longer range as well as the ability to control it (the range).
If you orbit blaster boats outside their falloff you will almost certainly win.

I got my stabber to orbit quickly around a brutix, shattered it's tank, and blew it to little pieces of metal surrounded by a cloud of ionized gas. Blaster boats are insane, becauase the hyperion with the right fit can shatter a Rokh in less than a minute, but if the rokh can get away and torp it then the hyperion is useless. Blasters are good close range, autocannons are good long range. My stabber with x4 425mms with EMP can deal a respectable 100dps at 8km, 250 dps at 4km. I suggest thorax for PVP because your drones can begin to kill a target while you web it down, get in close and eat it with blasters. Autocannons are good for hunting frigates. Rifter= best frigate. Basically, its a small destroyer 0.o LonTas 5 |

Blasters (and railguns) can only do a mixture of kinetic and thermal damage, whichever ammo they load. But autocannon (and artillery) ammunition comes with a wider range of damage types: the three short-ranged projectile ammo types -- EMP, Fusion and Phased Plasma -- do mostly EM, mostly explosive and mostly thermal damage respectively, for example.
How much of an advantage this is depends on who you ask.

I would advise going Projectiles. Auto cannons rock at close range with no cap issues. And Arty can take the wind out of someone's sails pretty quickly.

I have to say after using both, while blasters will always have a place in my heart for sheer facemelting ability autocannons blow them out of the water
Capless, able to change damage types, good fall off, the only down side is, your fighting in falloff (though you would be with blasters aswell) and they chew through ammo like crazy.
Blasters are good, but are a bit harder to use, but are no means weak.

Indeed. Lasers on what ship? A Punisher?
Rifter in any realistic setup given the same support skills will eat a Punisher. Lasers don't really get good until mediums and then only really on the Harb (as far as insurable ships go). Probably not the best way to learn PvP.
(And really, how many really good sub-BS laser ships are there? Harb, Zealot, Phantasm.... Anything I missed?)

To the OP I would say both gal and minni have excellent cruisers (vex/rup) and excellent AFs (is there such a thing ?) in the Jag and especially the Ishkur. But the current state of autocannons vs blasters would push me to minni as would the fact that you will want to learn in a decent frigate and there is NO BETTER, more versatile, new guy friendly frigate than the rifter. It's still my joint favourite ship to fly after 18 months in this game.
The rifter will become ur best friend while learning to pvp, even when you screw up, the rifter may just forgive you and get you out alive, it's fast, it's tough, it can fit all kinds of different setups and that is worth it's weight in gold when you are learning, I cannot recommend it enough.
All that and you still have the rupture to look forward to.

The reasons for the ACs being so good is manyfold.
Originally, Minmatar ships were meant to be fitted with either arty and shieldtank, or AC and armortank. Artillery uses much grid, while a shieldtank uses less grid than an armortank, so you can forget to fit artilleries and a large armor repairer without gimping your fitting. ACs on the other hand have low fittings requirements so would fit together with an armortank.
An armortank freed midslots, and all closerange boats aimed to fit speedmod, web, scram and a cap injector. This of course, was in a time were 1 vs 1 or at least few vs few was very common. Webs were still overpowered, so everyone aimed to fit one.
But eve has changed since then. Nowadays you fly in big fleets and webs are nerfed, and thus you do not need as many mediumslots for tackle as before. It started in the nano-age that people started to fit shield buffer tanks so they were able to fill their lowslots with overdrives and nanofibers. As nothing could outrun you you could drop the web and go with a disruptor alone, the rest were shieldmods and a speed mod.
The falloff changes were just the last puzzle part to make them fine ships again, after the nanonerf.
It's small pieces that finally made a good package, as much as it's small pieces that made the Tempest quite an undesirable ship to fly (before it had utility highs for the old mean NOSs and the medium slots to fit 1 ECM that would pretty much jam anything you activated it on.
But I do agree, Blasters need a boost. Real men do it the hard way: fly Minmatar! |

torp Rokh? never thought of that.
But, I would put my blaster rokh against any hyperion anyday. Yes a hyperion gets a huge dps bonus and rep bonuses. But how many people actually use reps, most of the times its straight gank. A rokh gets range and resist, 1v1 a hyp im moving to 9k range, and with a active/passive buffer shield tank with good resists Id smoke you.
