Current invention only upgrades a t1 bpo to a t2 so you can go "yay i can haz crowz nowz".
What if we add a skill that allows us to upgrade them beyond the t2 level? For example, make the upgrades on a logarithmic scale so each level of improvements takes 10x longer to upgrade to than the previous one? Various skills would be added such as..
*Shield Upgrading -- allows you to upgrade a ship's shield HP by 5% per level *Armor Upgrading -- same cept armor *Velocity Modification -- increase max velocity by 2% per level *Slots augmentation -- allows you to add another slot for every level until you max out slots.
Now for the ner***e part. The upgraded BPOs, once you want to manufacture have go get downgraded to 100 run BPCs. This means that you may spend 5 months upgrading a drake's shields, but then you can only make 100 of them.
This would not be a market thing, it would always sell on contract like faction ships.
Here's an example of the growth of a drake's shield HP over time: THESE ARE NOT SKILLS THERE ARE TIMES YOUVE RUN IT THRU
1: 1 hour, +5% shield 2: 10 hours, +10% shield 3: 100 hours (4 days) +15% shield 4: 1000 hours (41 days) +20% shield 5: 10000 hours (416 days) + 25% shield 6: 100000 hours (4166 days) + 30% shield
This would go on forever as you put your BPO through ever increasing cycles of upgrading, but there is a diminishing return with time.
This would allow for diminishing returns on better products that could give people willing to pay an edge in pvp/pve.
MARKET There would be no market entries, it would be up to the player to check stats before they buy it to avoid scams.

did you ever think about the market in that scenario? you would need a market entry for each possible combination.

WTB: Vagabond with 8 high/mid/low slots...
You thought it was uncatchable before?
Seriously? Have you given any consideration as to how unbalancing this idea would be? It is hard enough right now to keep ships somewhat balanced.

Slots would be so horribly OP it isnt even worth mentioning. For the rest as long as its done on a BPC basis, why not ? The improvement would likely be lower as well.

oh noes i can stick an extra ovadrive on my dramiel......oh no! On a better note why dont we give em like drawbacks, for example an extra slot cuts down PG by 5% or something.
