Despite a few discrepancies with prime fiction, I fully enjoyed Eve : The Empyrean Age...
However I have to say, Eve : The Burning Life, was absolutely AWESOME. Given my love for New Eden and its history, it's by far one of the best books I've ever read.
As a fan fiction writer, it's answered so many questions and opened up so many doors for storytelling and descriptive writing that frankly, I'm a bit lost at where to start with so many ideas buzzing around in my head. It's also answered one of the questions as a Gurista Loyalists that I've been wanting to know since Crielere.
If I have any gripe about the book at all, it's seriously minor. If I can pick any real fault with it, it's that it was a little short and has left me hungry for moar.
The only thing I really noticed that was contrary to prime fiction, was the spelling of the leader of the Blood Raiders name. In all the web based material he's referred to as "Omir Sarikusa", in The Burning Life he's referred to as "Omir Sarakusa".
Absolutely stunning work, and by far worth the wait given the launch delay from late last year.
Hjalti needs to be chained to to his desk, and fed Red Bull and steak until he's written another one.
A single word : MOAR.
What did everyone else think of the book?

Overall I enjoyed it. I do have a few gripes though.
I had a heck of a time "getting into" it. Took me until about halfway through the book to really feel immersed and interested. Up until then the plot just kinda seemed to float along with no real driving force.
It felt like the two main storylines were in no way connected. When they finally met it made sense but up until that point I found myself wondering where these two stories were going to connect.
Also the portrayal of Pod Pilots felt VERY rushed and stilted. Sure, I get it. We're ****s. But when you actually meet the pod pilot and get the quick and dirty "he's important in his alliance, he gives them his money, he does missions" schtick it feels like a giant cop-out. The other characters at least had a decent ammount of character-building where as the pod-**** was basically thrown in there to be the moustache twirling villain that was defeated quickly and efficiently without him even realizing he was being hunted.
I did really enjoy the looks at the various factions we got however do you really think people from those factions would call them "factions"? We tend to refer to our own groups by names or titles. For example, I'm an American, Verone is a Brit and such. You'd think people in the future would say I'm a Blood Raider or a Sani Sabik.
Also, WTB crazy nympho galante agent hot chicks :) _____________________________________________

Verone,
Have to agree it is a wonderful book. However I prefer the shortness of it. One of my problems with Empyrean was the fact it was trying to hard to be everything. This book was more controlled.
My minor gripe was the ending. It felt tacked on and there were more imaginative ways that it could have been done. Felt like they were trying for a twist, but it wasn't there.
But we need more CCP offical novels

tbh i think this happened before the empyrean age... im still reading ofc, but there are quite few clues... (biggest: somewhere along there when they mentioned Vitoc, they claimed it to be "irreversible"... which all of u who read empyrean age should know... )

It happened after... there are mentions of the war, and description of war torn Caldari Prime after the invasion.

Here is your Quafe, still fresh and cool. A few Sani Sabik tried to interfere, but don't worry I took care of them. I hope you have no problems with a dozen or so burning wrecks floating around the space station.
I also think a stray shot hit one of the living quarters of the station, but my chief engineer assured me that just a few million ISK any structural damage can be fixed and capable deckhands rehired.
Enjoy your Quafe Sir.

Agreed. I posted a review a week or so back and at least one respondant felt something along these lines. Overall I thought it was a pretty good book, a step up from Empyrean Age 9which was ok in its own right), and gave it a 6.5 or 7 out of ten.
I wuold certainly recommend it to my fellow players

Have to agree its too short... but hey, they wernt going to do 2000 pages for us now would they. Favourite line was "The squatters of Eve"... loved it, and as you said it gives more depth to the back story.
As for the capsuleer deal, think about how buff they are considering they spend all their day floating in goo. TBH, Im surprised they can walk.
Have to give a lot of credit to CCP, the back story to Eve is brilliant. Not that 90% of the players even bother to read it.

Edited by: Myxx on 02/05/2010 23:38:55 so, a question or two

whatever became of the rogue agent?
and, ****, they have teeth and i need to watch my back about them.
also, I want more.
and, if it helps any, I got rid of that annyoing line in my sig. |

I have to say that after Empyrean age i was really looking forward to reading this book.......but boy oh boy i was so glad it didn't cost me to much as i cant say i enjoyed reading it.
For me it was just way to predictable, and just struggling along at some points at least for me.
For the past 2-3 years i have been reading and rereading Robert Jordans Wheel of time saga and he has a really definite style in writing where all the major action happens in the last 50-100 pages of 500-700 pages and all they way through the books im not struggling to keep on going as i was reading this book.
As for the ending it self it was a bit wanting, it lacked the punch in the gut at the end.
I can see myself reading empyrean age again shortly but i dont think i will take this book on again.

I was discussing this on alliance forums as well... and with out fearing an onslaught of flame throwers, I'll at least try to be more civil in expressing my disappointment in this novel.
I'll admit I didn't finish it (this may be the first book I've never finished....) In fact, it is only my love (addiction) for EVE that fuelled my desire to read up as far as I did. I made it to the point where members of the four races plus folks from a couple pirate factions are sitting around an Amarrian religious retreat discussing the slaves in the field when I put the book down.
The story is ridiculous. I enjoy the writers style, but next time he creates, he should do so without the check-list laying beside his typewriter. I can just see him going through the plot and introducing this character and that one while crossing off items on the EvEolopedia of who's who in game... the only thing missing is a shuttle race with JarJar.

I have to agree with Manny here.
I thought this book was poor, though I loved EA when I read it.
Firstly there is a checklist, and thats fairly obvious from the start. The Cal to Min transition is frighteningly shoe horned in there.
After the quality of the Short storys, and "end of the world" and "black mountain" the prose was dire! Too much "Thanks babe" and "Hey dude! Glad your ok" "**** you too man". Its all very...skater kid.
So saved a few lives, meet the great and powerfull of new eden... then talk to them like a petulant child?!?
The mind clash section totally undermines itself explaining then un explining itself.
I shant go on. Disapointed
