Hi
I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find any reference to it so I will ask the question...
Recently I was afking autopilot in my shuttle. On board I had 4 x Dramiel blueprints, total market value $240mil. I know the risks of highsec ganking as well as anyone (well at least I thought I did) and I don't travel afk with anything I would regard as expensive enough to be a temptation to a ganker. I thought to myself... who is going to take a sec status hit for such a small amount. Anyway I got highsec ganked in either a 0.7 or 0.9 system (can't quite remember now). So my questions are... 1. Was it really worth it to the ganker to gank me given that the haul was pretty small and chances are at least 1 of the blueprints would have been lost with my ship? 2. I was always running under the assumtion that to operate in high sec you have to have higher than -5 sec status. This guy had -10 so how was he able to operate at all in high sec space?
Please don't get me wrong I'm not *****ing about it. This was a very small loss for me. I'm just glad I wasn't moving something more expenive that day. I feel that I have been running under false assumtions all this time and I'm curious about the logic behind it.
Thanks RAM72

Op, next time you feel so inclined to take such cargo through highsec, please dock up and contract it to me. I promise to accept for a price of 0 isk without forcing your ship to explode in the process.
This will hopefully make us both happy, as I will get my loot and save on ammo, and you can avoid the humilating shiploss. |

Awesome posts people, you completely failed at answering either question. Makes me wonder why people bother posting in the forums sometimes. Anyway I found my answers in another thread now. Live and Learn.

Wait a minute ... you were serious?
I guess we expected that for someone for whom 4 Dramiel blueprints are peanuts knows the basics about the risks involved in hauling valuable stuff through high sec. Stuff like: insurance payouts on tech 1 ships being (still) so high that a suicide ganker doesn't lose much at all except for sec status, or how afk hauling is asking for trouble because you give any would be suicide ganker all the time in the world to single you out. Especially in one of the most flimsy ships you can possibly buy. Some people suicide gank for as little as a 20 mil cargo.
If you weren't trolling, even though it really looked like it, you were being very naive in assuming that nothing would happen. Help us to make parrots game related today! |

security status is easily regained, ship insurance in it's current state (broken), means that they MAKE money losing a ship, so whatever is looted from your wreck is profit.
There's always someone willing to make a profit, no matter how small.

Yes I was being serious. and yes I can see now that I was being naive about what I consider to be a small amount. I'll get that amount back pretty quickly. The main point I was getting at was that I was running under the mistaken beleif that losing sec status to a ganker actually had some disadvantages whereas it doesn't really mean a lot at all to him. I had thought that going below -5 would prevent you from doing anything in highsec which I now know is wrong. So from what you are saying there are really no circumstances when you can afk autopilot unless your cargo container is completely empty.

They can still go around high sec. -2.0 you get shot at in a 1.0, -2.5 you get shot at in a .9....
We can still go through in our pods, and in fast ships. We can dock/use gates.
The guy was probably using smart bombs I am guessing?

Yeah, and there is some safety in having enough tank off course. The effort involved in suicide ganking a well buffered battleship or a freighter for instance, means you could (relatively) safely afk haul low value loads around high sec. But you can never be too sure.
edit: and indeed, sec status hits don't mean anything as people can train up and recycle suicide alts non stop (training time boost for new characters helps a lot with this I suppose). Help us to make parrots game related today! |

I don't think that is stopping anyone. But they might bypass that and do it with trial accounts. Help us to make parrots game related today! |

What ship was the ganker in?
If it is a T1, then you are missing a big point. They are insurable. You lose nothing. But have the world to gain.
If you go out in a BC or BS with T1 fittings and lose the ship in a high sec gank, most times you have lost nothing.
Whats more, if you are one of the people with mining alts, it takes maybe an hour to mine enough material for a BC. so you make the ship, give it to another toon, have him insure it, go out and high sec gank someone. Not only do you get the instant 15+ mil from the insurance payout, but you also have the chance for wonderful door prizes to drop from whatever you ganked.

Nice to see the stupid bus finally pulling in.
Sec status is a pain to regain. Trust me. It sucks. Each gank will lose you between 20 and 40 mil after insurance is paid out, so don't say that they make money on it.
And lastly, if people are ganking for 20 mil, they're doing it wrong.
And at OP - 4 dramiel BPC's = gank, every time.

I have been ganked AND podded in an empty ship simply because I afk'd on AP to Jita. Pilot was already -10 so I don't think he sec status hit mattered to him. No tears, because I know how his kind feed on them, but you should count yourself lucky you didn't lose any implants.
