Hello
I am 2mil Sp into the game and i was looking for some advice.
At the moment i am still in highsec in a band of noobies with a few veterans.
I am training solely at the moment in mining and trade for the simple reason that i need a way to generate ISK with ease. I say this as i have seen to many people try to pimp out a PvP ship straight away disappear into lowsec/nullsec and return later with no ship and no way of gaining wealth. I want to get to the point where i can take the losses and continue. I need another 2 months and then all SPs are going into PVP
My questions.
1.Can a solo player be successful in lowsec/nullsec if they choose there battles and i dont mean ganking PVE or mining ships
2. I know that a gang gives better options, but can it become to large to a point where smaller gangs are more effective. as in a tight knit team of 5 vs 25 especially if you are on vent
3. This is a BIG question can a small team take on a large corp if it is involved in ninja strikes. ie a team of five cloaker bombers appearing out of the sky and hitting hulks and then disappearing into the night. As long as the smaller team are dictating the encounters can they be successful.
I have a lot of knowledge of highsec but hardly any of lowsec or nullsec and i am sure that highsec and nullsec are completely different games.
Many thanks for your answers

Don't train mining if you want to be a pvper.
You can run missions for isk and keep training your combat skills.

This is good advice even if you DON'T want to be a PvPer.. Level 4's is where the (easy) isk is at.. It also has the advantage that many of the PvE skills are transferable in to PvP (in game skills, not players skills) so if you later decide you want to go killing people you will have a better base to work from.
Come to that, mining isn't any good if you want to be an industry player either. You are WAY better off with production and research skills. Mining only becomes worth it if you can run something like 5 or 6 accounts at the same time, and im not even talking about macros. Its a lot less boring when you have to control 5 hulks and an orca all at the same time, you strip belts like they are going out of fashion and you feel like you are actually doing something.
Edit - Answering at least one of your questions.. a small group of stealth ships descending on hulks and popping them in lowsec is the dream. In reality you will never likely find a hulk in lowsec, and if you do its either an idiot that you could pop solo in a T1 frigate, or bait. Cloaky gangs are fun, but if local spikes by like 5 or 6 people, most lowsec people that aren't there for the PvP go and hide.

"Choosing your fights" often means ganking PVE ships (e.g. mission runners in their missions) or mining ships (at e.g. explorations sites)--not just noobs mining or ratting at belts. And to answer the question, yes, there are plenty of successful solo PVP'ers in lowsec, killing other PVP'ers. It's really a question of patience and personality as much as anything else.

This question is misleading, as it seems to focus on size but implies a teamwork factor. All else being equal, bigger=better. However, a gang with good intelligence that is experienced in working together and that is well-coordinated often prevails against a bigger gang that is unprepared for the encounter, inexperienced in small gang PVP, and suffering poor command-and-control issues.

Yes, small teams take on large corps all the time in EVE, and it is precisely by choosing the terms on which to fight. When the big corp is camping your station with a RR BS fleet, you undock in small fast ships that slip right by them and go about your business; when they are roaming in large gangs, you duck out of sight at a deep safe while they pass, then resume your business; but when the bulk of their gang logs off for the night and a straggler has gone semi-afk at a safe spot to microwave some popcorn, you probe him out and gank him with a couple of frigates. "Guerilla tactics" are so annoying to bigger and heavier corps.

If you are solo in low sec you will sooner or later jump through a gate into a gank squad where nothing can be done other than die fast.
If you are solo in 0.0 you will sooner or even sooner than that jump through a gate into a very efficient gank squad complete with bubble, you will die even faster.

your tight knit cloaky gang works wonders in WH space.
WH space has to be my fav arena when it comes to pvp.
