Edited by: Droning Ceo on 05/04/2010 17:18:11 One of the key signs of an intelligent human is the need or want to acquire knowledge about a subject he/she is spending time upon.
When i first started eve many many many moons ago, there were questions to be asked, and wise men to be listened to. Rookie help was out of the question, the obvious solution? The forums. Yet so many people in game (not just this game too) run around totally clueless about even the most basic principles, the answers are only a click and 2 minutes away, yet they will spend sometimes YEARS of their time getting things wrong, and failing miserably at whatever it is they are trying to do.
So i put forth that our forum posters (and by extensions those that do not post but at least read) are more intelligent and knowledgeable than those who do not post or read.
although to be fair half the posts if not more are troll posts nowadays, however there is still a lot of useful information to be found here.
Par examplT:
i recently returned to the game, i had no idea about T3 ships, so i did a little ships and modules reading, spent about 20 mins IIRC, and ended up with a really nicely fit Loki 4 hours after returning to the game.
A friend i'd been chatting with who had carried on playing the game was sat about running lvl 4's in his loki (???) because it "was the best way to make isk" and "made use of his useless t3 investment" (?????) He was also using an atrocious fit.
What say you forumites? are we superior to the non forumites?!
tl;dr the human race contains more chaff than wheat.
EDIT: Changed title from "posters" to "users"

I'd emptyquote this, but then I'd be bad.
1) Use forum seach (Or, better yet, eve-search (hi, Chribba!)) 2) Post in an existing, relevant thread, if there is one
Anyone following those rules is smarter than anyone that doesn't. Now stop making provoking threads. "The thread-locks will blot out the sun!" "Then we will post in the shade!"

Edited by: Benri Konpaku on 05/04/2010 17:33:13 Yeah, you might put it that way.
While a lot of players just don't post on these exact forums*, it is usually those who frequent forums and ask the questions the ones who are usually on the loop of the best info about the game (any game.) Also the ones being the most elitist p'cks... but then everything has it's downsides.
So I don't know if forum posters are actually smarter (doubt it), but because they have more information available they might be able to make better judgements compared to those who don't at least lurk forums for info.
And yes I have absolutely no statistics whatsoever to support my post except for my personal opinion on the subject.
*I played for more than year and a half before posting here, but posted regularly on other EVE forum(s).

According to many top philosphers ad big hitting thinkers of our time, and time gone by.. as well as being something i'm right on board with is the idea that...:
As humans we have an inbuilt desire for knowledge, for exploring, for finding things out, for knowing STUFF. Why did we go to space? Why not? Why build the LHC? Why not?
The Why is simply to learn, maybe we'll find something out, it tends to be that the more intelligent people in a population have a higher drive to find more things out, thus the creation of this thread.
edit: also to add to this principle is the often quoted
"Ask a question and be an idiot for 5 minutes, Fail to ask questions and be an idiot for life" or something along those lines!

rofl, truth. i've heard tales of CAOD and it being a cesspit of eve, been in a few well known alliances over the years but never once cared enough to even think of opening that section up

I essentially do two things at work: work, and read/digest/respond to/research/ and generally sponge up infomration from the forums.
Plans are formulated and decisions finalized so that when in-game my effectiveness is maximized.
Hard to imagine playing Eve any other way, as eveonline.com and attendant information sites are an integral part of how I play.

Probably not.
More motivated? Absolutely!!! More knowledgeable? Absolutely! Better players? Almost certainly. More intelligent - perhaps slightly. perhaps not.
Technical, especially computer, people frequently mistakenly speak as if lack of knowledge is the same as lack of intelligence. I doubt that any Nobel Laureate can configure the overview and many can not edit the Windows Registry; that does not make them stupid.
If you are intelligent, then the spelling, grammar, topics and trolling in the forums might be more annoying than if you were stupid.
If CCP thought the forums were important, then eve-search would not require a third party to provide it and the NPE might mention the forums. Clearly, people should search the forums first. How else will they decide on the optimal race, nano fit, and POS Sov tactics?

Seriously tho.
I would say people reading the forums are probably better players, not because they're smarter than the people who don't, but because we share knowledge. So once someone discovers something, people will not have to learn for themselves

Seriously.
It's where a Minmatar goes on Blue Peter and puts a T1 ship together with a T2 ship using sticky back plastic and some empty washing up liquid bottles.

long time on forum <--------------------> short time on forum no brain <-------------------------> some brain
This is because i feel with every minute i spend in the eveo forums dumber then before.

Official game forums are for trolls, whiners and other assorted asshats to vent their pathetic, pointless opinions.
I would hardly equate these qualities as a sign of intelligence.
The intelligent player finds a proper forum in which to practice the lost art of social discourse. A place for discussion of issues without the need to wade through six pages of "this" and "i can haz ur stuffz".

Except that if you'd read the OP he clearly states and discusses that intelligent people seek out knowledge, and he clearly differentiates between the two.
nice try though.

Have you really read the forums? The lack in ability to spell or use proper grammar by the posters here is abysmal. I doubt most of the posters on these forums are very intelligent given their lack of ability to grasp even the most simple concepts of the English language (speaking only of the native English speakers).

To sidestep all the shatpoasting I will agree that forum users are going to be better informed than non-forum users if they are intelligent about what sites they use to gain knowledge. Forum poasters on the other hand.. *glances up* Well, no need to rehash the obvious.

Where did you get the idea that Grammar and spelling on an internet forum was a good measure of intelligence? Multiple language speakers anyone? also its pretty well known that a lot of intelligent people are lazy :D
