Played briefly with one sent for testing
Fantastic touch screen, honestly theyÆve really perfected the technology and software behind it, looks so sleek as well itÆs hard not to instantly want to buy one. However, I didnÆt really appreciate how much I like multitasking and switching through things before I used it. The lack of being able to multitask or at least quickly switch between things is a killer. I also got bored holding it and wanted to prop it up against something.
Still, looks very nice, but canÆt honestly think of any genuine reason to need one. That said IÆm sure itÆll sell like cake.

Edited by: Culmen on 07/04/2010 01:32:36 I long ago I swore to my self that I would touch nothing Apple. This thing just continues to affirm my vow.
Heres, a question, how do you prop it up? You know, when your arms get tired. How are you going to type on it? Don't make me laugh with that on screen no-tactile feedback "keyboard"
What? you can buy attachments for those? Why not just get a tablet PC, and run a program that actually reduces the amount of stuff you can do on your computer. You'll get similar results for a fraction of the price.
There's a reason Macs are virus proof, nobody has ever gotten a Mac to do anything useful even with root acess.
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

I've seen them and have been reading up on them a bit.
There are lots of reviews on youtube so there's no reason to take some random opinion... but for what it's worth: - Everyone I know who's tried one loves it - The price point is well below most laptops but it does almost everything a laptop does - It dispenses with the mouse (finally) so it's well suited to lots of situations where the mouse is a limitation - It's better for reading than most electronic devices (save maybe the Kindle) - It's better for video and pictures than most anything else
The star map application is AWESOME. It uses the internal accelerometer to determine how your holding it. You're then able to hold it up over your head and, any way you face it paints an image of the stars and then overlays the constellations on it.
The effect is like and augmented reality view of the sky. Very, very neat.
I'd like one but can't really make the case for buying it right now. I've got a macbook and I've got a iPod.
So, I'll probably wait for about a year. The price will certainly fall and the second generation of a thing is always better than the first.

At this early stage I'm holding off, mostly on ground for your first point. The first few weeks sees only Apple fan boys buy them, and the typical Apple marketing team is putting their insane budget to use buying every reviewer
I'll also make a point that comparing it to a laptop is pointless, the hardware and software doesnÆt even compete. How many programs do you like running on your laptop at once for example? I doubt many people say one. It's pretty much a given that theyÆre not going for that market.

All Android-based smartphones can do this too, for free (To be fair, I don't know if the iPad version costs $, but I would assume that it would, apple being the ***** that they are)
Google Sky Maps- Free, with the exact same functionality. And I can make calls.
Ninja edit: Hell, my Motorola Droid can even multitask... removing that functionality really hurts the product in my eyes. Ninja edit: formatting

Well they apparently sold around 400k units on launch so someone thinks its great. But to be perfectly honest its exactly the level of computer your average person needs. E-mail and youtube vids along with surfing, chat and the ability to run basic domestic programs like tax software and other organizational tools are all most common people use a laptop for anyways. That it can't multitask and encode your pirated dvd's for burning to disk at the same time as you forum whoor and run eve in a window is beyond the scope of the intended buyer i would imagine.

Edited by: Arvald on 07/04/2010 04:34:12 its a wonderful product for average users who just want to surf the web or watch videos and the like, but it is horrible if you are a more advanced user, as stated before, mostly because of its lack of any kind of standard ports and no multitasking.

This.
Real opinion, it will sell because Apple has some loyal customers, who are also a bit stupid, I have an iPod touch and a MacBook pro as well as my win 7 gaming rig, as much as I'd like to try one I can't justify it at all beyond "oohh shinneeeeh" mentality.

I preferred the college humour webbie angle "that its what people in Boston have been calling the iPod for years..)
It's a great piece of technology, but the more I hear Apple fanboys braying on about how it's the next best thing, the more I dislike it, some of the reviews about it are just ridiculous, it's good but you don't need it, nobody really needs it from a practical point of view apart from a small percentage of people that don't have an iPod Touch or decent laptop whether it's OS X, Linux, or Win 7, with both of these you're good to go, it's a luxury item that will do well because of customer loyalty/stupidity/wealth.
Just so we know I have Apple products and I like them, but I'm not f**king stupid either, but I would be if I bought one.
Hmmm here's hoping if I do find one in my possession the forums never hear about it.

So this product is a competitor in the "netbook" category right? As thus look like a solid choice. I'd like to see these migrate into their own niche within the college/workplace environment.
I personally am not overly concerned with price as much as I am with convenience and practicality.
I see nothing wrong with this product for general online usage etc. I don't see this as competing/replacing my laptop/desktop/Iphone. Though should do well in its own element.
What were they thinking with the name..... really? IPad? |

Tablet PCs are *NOT NEW*. They have been tried b4 and they have failed miserably. The only place where I've seen then being use with success is the on the medical field. And even there, it is only a success because they have docking stations everywhere.
Just because Steve Jobs made one, painted it white and put an apple sticker on it, doesn't make it the ultimate gadget.
They will not replace the desktop, they will not replace the laptops, they will not replace the pocket pc's (now known as smart phones). |

100% correct but never underestimate the power of stupidity, I've had a to and fro argument on another forum with a guy that owns a list of hardware that would put most geeks to shame and he's going to buy one, no argument to the contrary will tell him otherwise, of course it's his money and his choice but it's people like this that will buy it and there's more of them than we think.
300-400k units sold already, I bet my left nut that 90% of those people just don't need one, but they had to have one because it's the latest must have item or they're Apple fanboys. Apple know there's people like that and a lot of them are already hooked on the brand and it's those people they rely on to help fill the coffers, I've already said in this thread I use and enjoy my Apple products but they do what I need them for nothing more and I certainly haven't fallen for the Apple myth of superiority.
Apple is good brand but not without its faults, legacy support is poor and they get all evasive when you mention how little an impact they've made in Asia, which is a good tech market, double edged sword of course if Apple did take off to any great degree in that market we'd soon see the Apple security myth kicked right in the bollox.
