First off IÆd like to point out that this is not a whining moaning or general complaining post û I love this game and would just like to see if anyone has any answers for me.
This morning I was out hunting NPC pirates and found a cluster around a gate in a 0.6 sec region of Caldari space. I was about 5km from the actual gate when I locked onto my target npc (who was a further 9km away in the opposite direction from the gate), and decided to try out my lovely new Sabertooth missiles. I had him in my line of sight and activated the missile launcher in eager anticipation of his destruction. I watched the missile set off in his general direction and sat back waiting for the boom.
Well next thing I know I get a message saying IÆve done 30.3 damage to the jumpgate and the sentry guns open fire. I tried to warp away but every target I selected did not have the ôWarp toö option listed. I tried hitting the afterburners to get out of range but before I knew it I was sitting there in my pod next to a piece of debris and a container with all my stuff in it.
So my questions are:
1. Why did this happen. I only had the guristas invader locked and targeted so why did my missile hit the jump gate? 2. Is it possible to have ôrogueö missiles that just go where-ever they feel like, or lock onto the biggest target in the area? 3. Why couldnÆt I warp away û no matter where I tried I cÆdnÆt warp to it. And finally: 4. How can I best avoid doing this again?
P.S. I actually managed to make money out of losing my ship. I collected the insurance, bought a new Merlin for considerably less and went back and picked up my guns and stuff as they were still floating in space. So I made 70K from the whole deal - watching my MerlinÆs debris floating in space brought a tear to the old eye though!

It looks like the missile impacted the gate.
Missiles can be intercepted by rogue items in their flight path, including asteroids, friends, cargo containers, family, stations drones, and even you.
Turret fire on the other hand will go through anything.
And as for your insurance... that scares me... exploit, exploit, exploit. You didnt do it on purpose, so it was a pleasant surprise... but i garuntee other players are. ---------------- ~= Askari =~

What about your sec rating did that take a sharp drop?

Oddly enough no I don't think so. I was 0.9 before I got blown up and was still that after. I had a bit of a panic at first because I thought it would really hit my rating.
Unless of course the hit to the sec rating takes a while to show - ummm, hope not *crosses fingers*
I think i need to go and check right now!

even if you didnt hit the gate, and the npc was close to it, you can still to a certain amount of splash damage. you have to be a bit more selective with missiles. ______________

How can it be seen as a possible exploit?
He only had 70k left after buying a new Merlin. Buying the insurance in the first place wouldve cost a lot more than 70k

the missile might have impacted close enuff to the gate to have caused splash damage. I get this with my bombs, have to be real careful :D and i was protecting some miners, one of the other protectors was told to make sure his missles didnt go near me, when the enemy arrived.
I havent used a missle yet, but have seen them explode.

It may appear that you made money in the long run but you probably didn't.
Price of first ship + price of insurance - cost of new ship is probably a lose of money even though you got more than you paid for new ship.

You are forgetting it may be he was able to buy a new merlin for less than the old one.
When he says he made out he is stating he baought insurance to cover all his items and insurance pays when the shop blows. He recoverd his items in space ( he said that) and only had to buy a new merlin whcih he might have bought for less the second time around. so he had extra funds from the insurance payoff.
If you bought a new 2003 car and it blew up ( first you could probably sue the manufacturer) but the insurance would pay off and you could get another car same make and model for less now that 2004 are out. and have some money left over, that is not fraud unelss you activated self-destruct.

Insurance only covers a maximum of the mineral cost of your ship. It does not cover anything fitted to that ship.
