Say I'm blasting away happily at a Frigate then suddenly a cruiser jumps in. I lock up the cruiser but how do I stop firing at the frigate & start blasting the cruiser?

- Stop your guns.
- Click on the cruiser target window. Normaly on the top of the screen next to the overview.
- Reactivate guns.
- Profit

The first poster is correct.
Some additional info. After you click your guns to stop them they will have to finish their curent cycle before you can reactivate them.
To make this a tad bit easier you can group all the same type, and meta level guns, into one group so you do not have to activate/deactivate each separately.
To group your weapons they must be unloaded and then you hold shift, grab a gun and drop it onto another gun of the same type, then shift/grag/drop the now grouped two guns onto the third gun. Rinse and repeate.
Also, if by chance you are using different guns you are breaking one of the prime tenants of EVE, by all means, which it is not mandatory.
"One shall never mix guns"
Using guns and launchers is fine if the ship is made for it.

I would like to say somthing about grouping your guns.
This can have the advantage of activating them all at once, but there can be a down side to this also, ill illustrate with an example.
you have 8 artillery, they do 25 points damage each, grouped that is 200 points. you lock a frig and begin firing, it takes 75 points total damage to pop said frig, thats 125 more points then needed. but since there grouped as 8 you have no choice. youl spend 200 points to kill a 75 point frig. so be aware of your targets and dont group your weapons larger then needed or youll waste damage that could be used else where.
also, f1-f8 are excelent for activiting and deactivitating you modules, when you get used to using them. which can free up your mouse.
ctrl + left click will taget any thing you mouse over in space or on the over view.

Also keep in mind you can drag the activation buttons anywhere. By default high-slots are on the unmodified function keys, but you can also drag the buttons for mid and low slots up.
* Right-click on the white triangle on the HUD * Select unlock buttons * Drag the buttons where you want them. * Relock the buttons.
I also like to hide passive modules, since there is no point in having a button for them.

Since I didn't know about the other ways, I just unlock the current target as soon as the new target is locked. Wait for the weapons to cycle, and 'mash' the buttons. Oh, I unlock the target by clicking on it, then clicking the Lock Target button in the Selected Object button set.
