This is for people aspiring to be FCĘs or for those that want to brush up on their skills. I hope this will help. This will be written for those wanting to focus on small scale sub-cap roams/PvP. No bigger than 40 gangs. We will focus on common things that an FC should know. Followed by tactical advice for gang compositions. I will refrain from stating the obvious with the impression that everyone here is educated about target calling and has the experience to know how it is handled.
A few things to know when running a gang:
Overview You need to have several options for your overview in order to properly run gangs and for target calling purposes. For all overviews do not have gang members, alliance members, corp members, or any member with positive standings to your corp/alliance on overview. The overview setups you will need is PvP(this shows everything), Battleships only, Interdictor/Hictor only, Logistics only, and when you get into cap FCing Cap/super cap only.
Scouting Always have a scout that stays a jump ahead of the gang. A lot of FCĘs like to scout themselves with another Char. I do this but it tends to be a hassle. Find someone that is competent, knows how to scan systems, can speak good English, and put them as your scout. A scout can make or break a gang and either get you a lot of kills, get you killed, or get you no kills. So a confident scout is vital for any gang to succeed.
Confidence This is very important for any FC. You need to have confidence in yourself. Otherwise people will start making suggestions, you will lose control of the gang, Comms will get distorted, and it will be very frustrating for you. Have a plan and stick with it. Suggestions are OK but you should have a plan so stick with it. Do not second guess your move while in the process of executing your plan: (especially right before combat) otherwise it will lead to your entire gang being decimated.
Game Mechanics A good FC needs to be knowledgeable about all the game mechanics. This will only happen through experience. I could go on and on about this but game mechanics are vital for any FC to be effective in what he/she is doing.

Respect I have been in several alliances through the years and nothing is worse than having comms where everyone has a complete disrespect for one another by calling everybody names and what not. Remember that every single one of those usernames on ts/vent is an individual that has feelings. This is a game so treat people how you want to be treated. Saying please and repeating yourself multiple times will get you a longer way than cussing someone out for messing up. A lot of people play this game to escape from the real world. The last thing they want is to be cussed out or embarrassed on ts/vent. Remember everyone has feelings and not everyone is as educated as yourself in PvP. So be patient with people and it will get you a long ways and make your gang much more enjoyable for yourself and for the people flying under you. I cannot preach about this enough. Just respect each other. Patience This is the one thing that cannot be taught. You need to have patience as an FC and this only comes through experience. Knowing to not jump the gun and taking the time to have your scout look at the other side of the gate when there is a target just sitting there is a prime example. Always remember that you do not know what can be on the other side of a gate no matter how juicy the target is. Target Calling First target is always primary, second is secondary, 3rd is tertiary. Different FCĘs have different styles. Depending on the situation I either tell my guys to sort name arrow pointing up or sort by distance. Make sure you are always calling at the least a primary and secondary target. If you do not have a lot of people that understand English in your gang then make sure you call the target say the first three letters followed by the ship type. Just be clear and concise. ItĘs ok to be excited when calling targets. It adds a fun element to the gang. Tactics BC/Logi gangs No matter what people say this is one of the most solid yet cheapest fleets to form. Ideally you will want Drakes and scimmyĘs/basiĘs. But any shield buffer ship will do in these gangs. If you notice you have several guardian pilots then switch to an armor buffer tank gang. Make sure all logiĘs add eachother to watch list. This is very important. The ideal gang makeup will be as follows: BCĘs(make sure you state whether this is an armor gang or a shield gang this is very important) > LogiĘs (state what kind of logiĘs like shield logiĘs or armor logiĘs) > Cloaking Dics (cloaking interdictors are always good esp for these gangs) >Inties(for extra tackle. But the noobs in t1 frigs if thatĘs all they can afford to fly. Tackle is always great to have!).
Ok so your gang is sorted but wait there is more. Ideally in a gang like this you will want everyone to be able to handle some range so your gang can be more versatile. Make sure everyone is packing some range so you can dictate range it the need arises. Make sure your Drakes are packing HMLs and not HAMS. Make sure your Canes are packing ArtyĘs and not ACĘs. You get the picture. Ok I am not going to tell you all my tricks but I will discuss one tactic. So you come across a sizeable gang. Numbers look even or your gang is just there for damage and fun you are all in cheap ships except the logiĘs so what is there to lose? Push for fighting on the gate. This is ideal for several reasons. The first is you can tell your LogiĘs to not aggress anyone. Just tell them all you care about them doing is to focus on broadcasts. Tell them to stay on the gate and just do that. If they get primaried ask them to take some damage then jump through and come back into the fight and get on the gate again. A lot of people do not like to do this tactic but I promise you your logiĘs will stay alive more if they stay on the gate with your fleet and do not care about getting on KMĘs. also tell your pilots to watch when they start taking damage. If they notice that their starting to die tell them.

to deagress and jump through the come back into the fight. If they can warp out to a celestial tell them to do so. Again fights on gate are ideal 80% of the time for this kind of gang makeup. FC, keep in mind you guys are in insurable T1 BCĘs. you lose 20m tops for a BC loss. Do not be afraid to call Recons, Hacs, and faction cruisers primary just to inflict isk damage. It will look better on the KBĘs. 3 t2 Fitted bcĘs equate to one fitted Hac/recon. Always remember this. Now for deciding what to primary that is up to you. If you notice it is an armor tank gang with armor logi support focus on the shield tankers and vice versa if itĘs a shield rep gang. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO TELL YOUR GANG TO BROADCAST FOR REPS!!! I cannot stress this enough. Those LogiĘs are there for a reason. Enough about this kind of gang you get the picture.
RR BS Gang
For this the order will be RR armor buffer BS > Armor LogiĘs > Hics/Dics > Inties. BCĘs can be in the mix as well. Now there are different variants to this kind of gang and different fcĘs will do different things based in the circumstances. Its been my experience that the most versatile RR gangs are the ones where the battleships can hit up to 100km out and each has 1 RR and heavy armor maintenance bots. MegaĘs, Temps, Apocs, Ravens can all do this well and are affordable. Just make sure they are trimarked out, have a few plates and max resistances. The name of the game is not DPS here its being able to absorb damage.
Again tell your LogiĘs to add each other to the watch list. What you also want to tell is that you need to assign a primary anchor. This should be you. Then assign a secondary and tertiary anchor. What you then tell the gang to do is add the anchor to watch list and orbit him at 2,000km this will allow everyone to be in range to RR. Make sure you tell everyone watch broadcasts and go to town. Same concept basically applies to this as Drake/Logi gangs. These are great gangs if done right.
Different people do different things. I have seen people add neutralizers to their BS in order to cap enemy dreads out and inflict as much damage as possible to enemy cap fleets. Just be creative. These fleets are very good and even better if you have the 100km range.
LRH gangs
These can be the most challenging gangs to run. Your fleet composition should be: LRH > Shield LogiĘs(You want ScimmyĘs) > Cloaking Dics > Inties. Every HAC should have one LSE and an mwd and be able to hit from 80-100km out. Make sure you can target from 100k or more this is so vital. These gangs can be really good if the FC knows what they are doing. If you see a fight about to happen always tell the fleet to burn towards a celestial object and make sure you tell them how many cycles of the mWD to use. You need to stay away from Fleet BS or they will rip you a new one. If the enemy has sizeable Fleet BS compositions go for stragglers and have your dictors catch people as fleet is warping off and go in and out in and out and guerilla warefare them and capitalize on their mistakes.
If you decide to engage someone else. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS primary the enemy dicĘs first!. They will cause you to lose several of those expensive LR HAcs. Make sure you also clarify to your pilots that as soon as they see their overview yellow boxed they need to bail out. You should always stay aligned to a celestial and everyone should keep aligned to the same celestial. This fleet composition is ideal for Guerilla warfaring blobs and can be a real thorn in anyones side.

This is really all I feel like typing for now. The only way to be a good FC is to keep doing it. Don't let what people say deter you. Alot of people will be willing to join your fleets as long as your willing to lead a gang and be respectful towards others about it. Not everyone likes to FC but everyone likes to have an FC in their corp that is active and willing to lead gangs.
Go nuts, have some fun, and its okay if you die. This is just a game and its all internet spaceship pixels. Its not the end of the world! Hope this helps and good luck out there!

Nice, short and simple. Two things I'll add.
1) delegate: your job as an FC is to have your hands as free as possible to make decisions and call commands, not to do everything. Have an XO (eXecutive Officer) that helps you run the gangs, like making sure bonuses are flowing, fleet advert is up, be the default secondary FC if you go down, etc. When you're just new at running gangs, having somebody senior do that will help you.
2) build a team: having a couple of people you know and who know you help you with your gangs, esp. when you just start, is invaluable. They will soon know what you want before even asking them to do it. Once you get good, you can challenge yourself by flying with a completely new crew, but when you just start out, having that mutual confidence and trust going is really helpful when otherwise your head might feel like it could explode with information overflow. Perhaps you should even stick to one gang type: having less variables means you have more time to work on getting the details right (understanding what you gang can do, what strategies work, which ship types are most dangerous to you, how long it takes your gang to align, knowing the systems you fly to and your opponents very well, etc.) instead of just throwing yourself into the unknown each time. _____________________________________

One thing i'd highlight is to have situational awareness of where most of your fleet is in relation to the targets if you are the target caller.
One of the most common rookie mistakes i've seen is to call primaries that are out of range of a significant number of your team, forcing them to burn towards the enemy (and often frustratingly for them away from a similar closer target) before they can lay down the DPS.
Knowing when it's better to call another primary where you know you'll get DPS instantly applied rather than having to wait 10-15 seconds for everyone to get into range can be the difference between heavy losses and holding the field.
Another thing i'd say is don't be afraid to change your mind. Nothing worse than an FC blindly determined that the surprizingly super tanked XXXX ship is going to go down even if it's going to take another 60 seconds of focused fire, while the rest of the gang is slowly picked off one by one.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

good basic stuff.
the nice part of TS is you can MUTE every one
the single reason i don't join corps is becose of convos like this :
like to talk> omg am primery like to talk> fck fck am about to die like to talk> damn am dead like to talk> omg omg they poded me
me> SHUT THE F U C K UP !
i wonder if biger aliances can behieve when on coms... ppl lose ships in gangs simply becose coms are not cristal silanced?
to all the piple guys yes is game yes is exiding to shoot at thinks but it wont help any one to know you died (no one care to be honestn every one dies) but keeping only the FC talking and the target caller will mayby make you not die next time.
if i was to give one rule that will be the first one pls SHUT UP. whith all do restpect cheer up after the fight is over
good post AAA, btw are you from this web site http://www.team-aaa.com/

When calling targets reiterate; nothing drives the point home like repetition. Also emphasize the primary over the secondary and tertiary.

I think any FC that encourges his fleet to smack in local after a fight win or lose is just plain lame, you'll gain more respect for saying "GF" in local if you win and even if you lose you'll create a better image for your organisation. But, there will always be lame smacktards who want to get the last word in to compensate their failings
