I'm thinking about upgrading my current hard drive. Right now its a Seagate 320GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache drive. I want to get at least a 1TB drive under $100. However I need some advice at which would be better for gaming performance. I was looking at one with a 64MB cache, but speed is at 5400RPM. Then there are the 32MB cache drives that go up to 7200RPM.
Any idea which is better? -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Sadly WD has passed Seagate in reliability recently. I used to swear by the seagate drives.
Definitely 64mb cache!
I got myself a 1.5TB WD 1.5tb Maybe consider another 40 bucks for an extra 500gb of space 2tb

Same, 'til my 1TB Seagate Barracuda drive decided to brick itself sometime last year (I got it working again after following some crazy guide I found online, as it turned out to be an alarmingly widespread problem but don't think I'd buy from them again.)
I'd go with the WD one

I was noticing that some of the Seagates suddenly had 1 egg ratings on Newegg, which got me suspicious.
I was looking at the WD drives before and they seem pretty decent. Just debating on whether I want the 1, 1.5 or 2 TB model. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Thanks for the tips, but I ended up getting a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black. Read some reviews and saw the Green wasn't really that fast.
Now just waiting until I have more money and feel like buying a small SSD for my boot drive. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

have several of those 1tb caviar blacks now, WD make a good solid drive, have done for a long time, which is a lot more important than some benchmarked performance difference which may not actually exist.
