I read most of your post, and am a nice guy, but missed the important part.
Obama said giving patients the right to permit visits from non-relatives may help people who have lost a spouse and donĘt have children, or members of some religious orders.
This is a quote. It is from business week. This means that the new executive order applies to all people who wish that non-immediate family is allowed to see/have power of attorney over them.
I failed at reading comprehension, (actually I don't think it was in the Washington Post article...) but either way, it makes the "gays are getting rights straights don't have" issue moot.
Of course gays are not the only ones being discriminated against. There are numerous people being discriminated against always. I was just happy about this particular victory as it is relevant to myself. Yes, I am a selfish bastard, but I do champion the cause of others when I can... ===

You obviously are not very familiar with the civil rights movements in the US. It has never been a movement that encompased all inequalities. It has always been piecemail.
In my state, Virginia, as like many others that have gotten rid of common law unions, they utilized the anit-gay establishment to run the laws through the legislatures and/or through state votes. This was done not because many people do not believe that heterosexual couples should not be allowed to have civil unions, but that the civil union laws allow homosexuals to attain equal civil union rights, if the laws were inacted they way that they were written.
The homosexual rights movements is ultimately the last civil rights movement that will be necessary. By allowing gays to attain legal civil unions, and all the rights aquired by said union, the states will no longer be allowed to deny any unions between any two consenting adults. Therefore allwoing any adult of age to say who is or is not allowed to visit them and/or make medical decisions and/or inact advanced directives.

I'm gonna go ahead and admit something embarrassing. I didn't notice there was a second page to your news link. I stopped reading after "But opponents of same-sex marriage..." I thought that was the end and didn't care to finish the paragraph.
Further reading does show that this extends further than I thought... so... ya... good job President Obama... never thought I'd say that.

We all do it... Even I did, and I amended my first post to reflect that. Just one more lesson for both of us in the "read before you post" life rule... ===

As that my statement was an overstatement and that you have seen that this does actually go all the way down to the rights of the individual, I will refrain from all originally planned trollish replies
Just because a single group is fighting for a civil right does not mean that it should be fought against by those that believe that the ultimate right is the individuals right to make their own decisions. This is so because any civil right given to a group should inherently be given to all or that the new movement finishes the equal practice of the embattled right. The basis of non-equal rights is that something is being denied to someone or some group, but is given without question to others. That should be a red flag to any individualist.
If after one fight is won and the same right or other is then denied to other groups, then the fight should then refocuses on that. The fight for civil rights and equal rights should never cease.

In other news considering gay rights, the governor of Virginia tried to force college campuses to remove clauses from their employment contracts protecting against discrimination based on sexual orientation. After a good public lynching by the college campuses, he retracted his statement, because he realized being a **** conservative idiot is not a good move. ===

Not by a long shot. There's a building movement for animal rights in this country. The animal rights = civil rights fight is just getting warmed up.

It's an excellent move. It'll get him hated on college campuses but it'll get him reelected by all of the other conservative idiots who agree with him.
On a side note, I have to say that it's heartening how people are able to openly identify as gay on a site that's famous for trolling griefers. And there's been little to no overt trolling on this issue.
Gay is quickly becomeing no big deal. I think that's just as it should be.

In all my years playing Eve I've never been trolled for being gay. Oh sure, I've encountered pilots who seemed to only be able to describe things or people as "gay" or "***" but that's their individual failure, not a reflection of Eve itself. It's pretty ironic I guess. This is a very competitive, smack talking, griefing, non consensual pvp'ing, noob spanking group of people, but I've never seen any anti-gay stuff here. People just don't care (thankfully) and I've been able to mention using the word "gay" as offensive and people were fine with not doing it.
Besides, there is a fairly large number of gay illuminati.. er I mean cylons.. er I mean players in Eve. We all know each other, and are highly placed just in case there needs to be a revolution. Who'd like to be first against the wall?

I've always enjoyed that aspect of EVE, I've only ever met one person who was less than ok with gay people, and everyone else is perfectly fine. Actually there was that other guy who responded with no one wants your blood ***, when I made that other gay-related topic, but Shadow got rid of his comment and proceeded to say that the topic should remain civil. Yay Shadow! ===
